Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. The student notes the trends for appliances like the vacuum cleaner and refrigerator, as well as the decline in hours spent on housework. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in reading the data, such as stating the refrigerator started from 0 in 1920 when the chart shows roughly 2%, and minor confusion over percentages versus hours. Despite these inaccuracies, an adequate overview is provided and key trends are identified, meeting the requirements for a Band 5.5 to 6.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has an overall coherent arrangement, dividing the description into a brief introduction, body details, and an overall summary. However, the paragraphing and logical progression are hindered by weak cohesive devices and repetitive linking (e.g., 'and then... and then'). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and transitions between sentences feel mechanical rather than naturally flowing. The structure provides basic organisation, but the lack of sophisticated cohesive devices keeps this criterion at Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting words such as 'demostrates', 'alterations', and 'appliance'. However, there are numerous noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'demostrates' for demonstrates, 'vaccum' for vacuum, 'moeover' for moreover, 'refrigator' for refrigerator, and 'housechores' for housework. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited and somewhat inaccurate lexical range, placing it firmly at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but the writing is marred by frequent grammatical errors, missing prepositions, and incorrect verb tenses (e.g., 'the line graph demostrates the alterations in 1 country electrical appliances', 'vaccum cleaner initiate from 30', and 'the number of housework increases'). Punctuation and sentence boundaries are also occasionally neglected. While communication is not entirely impeded, the high frequency of errors prevents the score from reaching Band 6.0.
