Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The student covers all parts of the task by reporting on appliance ownership and housework hours from 1920 to 2019. An overall trend is attempted, stating that refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership rose while washing machines were lower and housework hours decreased. However, some data points are inaccurate or poorly described, such as claiming the washing machine percentage was 'almost stable from 1920 to 2019' despite rising from 40% to 75%, and describing the refrigerator as 'stable at 100 as well' after 1980. The overview lacks sufficient clarity regarding overall comparative trends, leading to an under-development of key features. Therefore, the response fulfills the basic requirements but lacks precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response is divided into logical paragraphs with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on appliances and housework hours respectively. However, progression within paragraphs is clunky, and the use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical or inaccurate, as seen in phrases like 'To begin with households' and 'Meanwhile, the number of hours'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be structured more effectively to group related data. While there is a clear overarching arrangement, the faulty and repetitive cohesive devices prevent the text from achieving a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms such as 'ownership', 'electrical appliances', 'housework', and 'percentage'. However, there are notable word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'total time spent during housework' instead of 'on housework', 'go rise in percentage' instead of 'rose in percentage', and 'stable at 100'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are constrained by frequent inaccuracies, and spelling or phrasing mistakes occasionally require the reader to interpret the intended meaning, placing it firmly in the band 5.5 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures frequently contain grammatical errors. Examples include missing articles ('percentage of refrigerator', 'In 1920 number of hour'), incorrect verb forms ('go rise', 'decline' instead of 'declined'), and awkward phrasing ('the refrigerator percentage goes higher and stable at 100'). Errors in grammar and punctuation are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader, though they do not entirely obscure the overall communication of the trends shown in the graph.
