Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by covering both appliance ownership and the time spent on housework. An overview is successfully attempted, and key features such as the rise in appliance ownership to 100% and the corresponding decline in housework hours from 50 to 11 are identified. However, some aspects are under-developed or imprecise; for instance, the writer states that the refrigerator started at '0%' in 1920 when the data indicates 2%, and data points are sometimes generalised rather than supported with precise figures, such as stating 'little over from 70%' for the washing machine in the final year. The reporting of trends is generally relevant, but the overall development remains somewhat basic and lacks full extension for a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the essay into an introduction, body paragraphs, and a brief conclusion or final overview. Information flows logically from appliance ownership to housework hours. However, cohesion is occasionally faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear, as seen in the fragmented second sentence of the introduction ('While the other graph shows...'). Paragraphing is used, though internal cohesion devices within paragraphs are basic and sometimes repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on 'also increased'. Progression is visible, but the management of cohesive links prevents the text from achieving a more fluid and sophisticated organizational structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate basic trends using terms like 'ownership', 'appliance', and 'decline'. However, the range of vocabulary is limited, and there are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include misspellings such as 'rafrigerator', 'mahine', 'incresed', 'frrom', 'biginning', and 'washng', alongside awkward phrasing like 'the housework by the week in the time spam'. These lexical errors and spelling mistakes occasionally cause slight distraction for the reader, though they do not completely impede communication, placing the response firmly in the middle band for this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and introductory time markers. However, there are frequent structural errors and issues with articles, prepositions, and verb tenses that persist throughout the text, such as 'had a significant increase over the time frame' instead of 'experienced a significant increase', and missing articles before singular nouns. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, the control over grammar is inconsistent. The presence of these recurring mistakes prevents the response from demonstrating the more reliable control and higher frequency of error-free sentences required at the next level.
