Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key features while misinterpreting others. For instance, the writer claims that washing machines were used 'much more than any other appliances' in 1920 (40%), overlooking that refrigerators and vacuum cleaners started differently, and later incorrectly states that in 1980 the usage of washing machines 'had fell among any other appliances'. The overview is underdeveloped and inaccurate regarding trends. To improve, the writer needs to ensure all data is read correctly from the charts and present a clearer, more accurate summary of the main trends and comparisons.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organisation with a logical attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and specific time periods. However, there is no clear overall progression due to confusing sequencing and weak referencing. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as abrupt transitions between paragraphs and repetitive sentence openings. To achieve a higher band, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that ideas flow logically from one sentence to the next without confusing time markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'high incline' and 'steady growth', but uses them inaccurately or with incorrect collocations, like 'climed to just 50% use' and 'vaccume cleaner' (spelling error). Phrasing is often repetitive, relying on basic structures to describe data changes. To improve, the student should expand their range of vocabulary for describing trends and pay closer attention to word choice, spelling, and standard collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The text displays a very limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. While there are some attempts at complex sentences, they are often faulty, as seen in 'In the year 2019, both refrigerator and vaccum cleaner is being used is alomost every house' and 'refrigerator had high incline of usage in household works which is about 55%'. Errors in subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and prepositions are frequent throughout the text. To move up, the writer needs to exercise better control over basic grammatical forms and produce a higher proportion of error-free sentences when attempting complex structures.
