cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The line graph tracks the changes in ownership of electrical goods and the time spent on doing housework in housholds in a country between 1920 to 2019.

In 1920, few people were using refrigerator. But the proportion of individuals using refrigerator rise gradually and the number hit 100% in 1980 and it remained stable till 2019.

The line graph of other two equipments are quite similar. The washing machine got the highest percentage 40 whereas, vaccum cleaner got 30 in 1920. The graph of these two appliances hit the same percentage 70 in 1960. The number of washing machine users dropped little bit and then it rose slow and steady till 2019. On the other hand, the percentage of vacuum cleaner got its peak in 2000 and remained stable till 2019. Moreover, in 2019 people spent less hours in their chores as compare to the past in 1920. 50 hors a number of individuals spent in their housework whereas now it compressed around 10 hours because of the usage of these electrical appliances.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by reporting some key features of both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours graph. However, the selection of data is incomplete and contains inaccuracies, such as stating that few people used refrigerators in 1920 when the figure was near zero, but omitting a clear overview of the overall trends. Some ideas are limited and under-developed, particularly when discussing the percentage of vacuum cleaners and washing machines in the middle decades. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer overview that captures the main trends across both charts and support all reported data points accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the response, moving from refrigerators to the other two appliances and finally to housework hours, but there is no clear overall progression due to poor paragraphing and abrupt transitions. Cohesive devices are used minimally or inaccurately, with phrases like 'The line graph of other two equipments are quite similar' and 'On the other hand' applied mechanically without establishing clear logical links between sentences. Referencing is also weak in places. To improve, the writer should group related data into well-structured paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive markers to connect ideas smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'proportion' and 'compress', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'equipments' (an uncountable noun used incorrectly with a plural) and spelling/form issues like 'vaccum'. Phrasing tends to be repetitive and mechanical when describing trends. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to expand their range of functional vocabulary for describing data trends accurately and ensure correct word forms and spellings.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that turn out faulty. There are noticeable errors in grammar, including missing articles ('using refrigerator'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the proportion of individuals... rise'), and awkward prepositional phrases ('spent less hours in their chores as compare to the past'). These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should work on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb tense consistency and article usage, while gradually incorporating error-free complex structures.
