Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the student attempts to report on the main trends in the charts, the description is limited and contains significant inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the text claims that in 1920 the percentage for refrigerators was zero and that it jumped directly to 55% in 1940, whereas the data shows different starting points and trajectories. Furthermore, the overview provided at the end is overly simplistic and fails to capture the full scope of the relationship between appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours. The ideas lack sufficient development, and the mechanical, sequential listing of data points without adequate synthesis prevents the response from achieving a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response shows some organization through the use of sequencing words such as 'firstly', 'secondly', and 'lastly', but there is no clear overall progression or logical paragraph structure. The entire body of the text is crammed into a single block of writing, which makes the progression difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and repetitive manner, such as the constant repetition of phrases like 'then the percentage increased'. Referencing between sentences is sometimes unclear, and the lack of proper paragraphing significantly hinders the flow of information across the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student relies heavily on basic, repetitive words and phrases, such as 'percentage increased' and 'people used'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'the dot type line was described for the vaccum cleaner', and spelling mistakes like 'vaccum' and 'refrigeraator'. While the writer attempts to name the different appliances and categories, the lack of a varied lexical range and frequent lexical inaccuracies cause some difficulty and strain for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writing demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, consisting mostly of simple sentences linked by basic conjunctions. Attempts at more complex sentence forms are rare and often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles throughout the text, such as missing capitalization ('the charts illustrates'), incorrect prepositions ('in households ifirstly then one country'), and tense inconsistencies. These frequent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a weak control of basic sentence mechanics.
