Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts illustrates the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in household in one country between 1920 and 2019. The charts show general trend of refrigerator and vacuum cleaner hitting their peak, on the other hand washing machine percentage is still growing. These changes inturn led to significant drop in hours spent doing housework.

The first chart shows that all three of these appliances were introduced in 1920, the vacuum cleaner and washing machine started their sales with a huge start in 1920 with 30% and 40% household already owning them respectively, on the other hand refrigerator started at 0% in 1920 but it had had the fastest growth among these appliances hitting the plateau in 1980 with 100% household owning it by then, vacuum cleaner however was slower then refrigerator but it also hit the plateau in 2000 with 100% household owning it, washing machine on the other hand was the only appliance which dropped in percentage going from 70% in 1960 to around 65% in 1980 but this appliance has also shown upward momentum hitting its all time peak in 2019 with around 75%.

The second chart however shows us the impact these appliances had on the number of hours people spend doing housework per week, the numbers started at 50 hours per week in 1920 and has gone down from it almost every decade hitting its lowest in 2019 with 10 hours per week.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across both charts. You provide a clear overview in the introduction, noting the general trends of rising appliance ownership and decreasing housework hours. The details regarding the refrigerator, vacuum cleaner, and washing machine are mostly accurate, noting milestones such as the 100% saturation for the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner by 2000 and 1980 respectively, alongside the downward trend in housework hours from 50 to 11 hours. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or imprecise; for instance, stating that appliances were 'introduced in 1920' overlooks that the data simply starts in 1920, and the description of the washing machine's minor dip could be integrated more smoothly with the overall upward trajectory. To reach a higher band, ensure all data points are interpreted with complete precision and deeper comparative analysis.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction/overview paragraph, a body paragraph for the first chart, and a body paragraph for the second chart. Information and ideas flow logically from the appliance statistics to their direct impact on housework hours. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or faulty due to repetitive phrasing, such as starting multiple clauses and sentences with 'on the other hand' or 'washing machine on the other hand.' Paragraphing is used, but referencing within and between sentences could be managed with greater variety and flexibility to ensure smoother transitions. To improve further, diversify your cohesive devices and avoid over-relying on basic contrast markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, demonstrating a sufficient range to cover the visual data effectively. You attempt less common lexical items such as 'ownership', 'saturation' (or hitting the plateau), and 'upward momentum', which shows an awareness of academic style. However, there are some word-choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'sales with a huge start' instead of a strong starting point, and slight awkwardness in phrasing like 'hitting the plateau'. Spelling is generally accurate, and minor lexical errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, incorporate a wider, more precise range of vocabulary and collocation with fewer slips in word choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting multi-clause sentences to connect trends. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, the opening sentence lacks an agreement between subject and verb ('The given charts illustrates'), and there are run-on sentences joined merely by commas where semicolons or full stops would be more appropriate (e.g., 'the vacuum cleaner and washing machine started their sales... respectively, on the other hand refrigerator started...'). Prepositions and articles are occasionally missed or misused. While these errors rarely impede communication, they reflect a control limited to a mix of simple forms and some faulty complex structures. Improving punctuation control and sentence boundary awareness will elevate your grammatical score.
