Student answer (Band 6.5)

The charts show a trend in the percentage of 3 household appliances (washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner) ownership and hours dedicated per week to housework for a particular country from 1920 to 2019.

From 1920 to 2019, ownership of all appliances had surged from all 3 being under 50 percent to all 3 being available in most houses. However, washing machine, which was most prominently owned (40 percent) amongst the 3 in 1920, was owned by least households (around 75%) amongst the 3 in 2019.

Despite the vaccum cleaner and refrigerator having substantially different percentage ownership (30% and around 0% respectively), both had the same percentage ownership in 2019, which says that the refrigerator had the greatest boom in its ownership amongst the 3 appliances.

The number of hours per week dedicated to household chores had slumped from being 50 hours in 1920 to just above 10 hours in 2019. This suggests that the increasing ownership of electrical appliances in the country caused the hours spent doing housework to significantly decrease throughout the years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task and successfully presents an overview of the main trends. The student selects key features, such as the overall surge in appliance ownership and the steady decline in weekly housework hours. However, some parts of the task are handled more fully than others; for instance, the description of specific data points occasionally lacks precision, such as referring to the 1920 refrigerator ownership as 'around 0%' when the data shows 2%. Furthermore, the analysis of trends tends to over-generalise slightly without fully exploring all the comparisons visible in the line graph, which keeps the response at this level. To reach higher bands, the writer should incorporate more precise data points and offer a more thorough comparison across all categories.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from appliance ownership to housework hours. Paragraphing is used appropriately to divide different aspects of the visual data. Cohesive devices are generally present, such as 'However' and 'Despite', but referencing and linking can occasionally feel mechanical or slightly repetitive, pointing to some faults in cohesion. For example, starting multiple sentences with transitional phrases or relying on basic sequencing limits the fluency. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to use cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that referencing between sentences is smoother and less predictable throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate main trends clearly. There are successful attempts to use less common items and functional reporting verbs, such as 'surged', 'slumped', and 'dedicated'. However, there are a few lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors, such as 'vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', and minor awkwardness in word choice, like 'most prominently owned'. These errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument without difficulty. To move up to the next band, the writer must demonstrate a wider range of vocabulary with greater precision, better control of collocations, and completely accurate spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures reasonably well. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles in phrases like 'percentage of 3 household appliances' and minor prepositions issues, but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. The majority of sentences are understandable, reflecting a solid control of basic structures while attempting more complex ones. To attain a higher band, the writer should produce more frequent error-free sentences when deploying complex structures and refine punctuation and article usage.
