Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to report the main features of both charts, the overview is inaccurate and contradictory, stating that washing machines have the lowest percentage of 61% while also missing the overarching trend of household appliances generally increasing over time. The body paragraphs present a series of fragmented data points with numerous inaccuracies—for example, claiming that refrigerator ownership in 1920 was 0% when the graph shows 2%, and stating arbitrary numbers not supported by the visual data. The details provided are limited and lack a clear focus on meaningful comparisons, resulting in a somewhat confused account of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the attempt to group information by appliance and time period, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is rudimentary, with a very brief overview followed by a dense, disorganised body of text. Cohesive devices are minimal and mechanical, relying on repetitive time markers such as 'In 1920', 'in 1940', and 'in 1960' without sufficient linking words to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons. Referencing and progression between sentences become slightly disjointed, which prevents the ideas from flowing logically.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic information. The student uses standard vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'ownership', 'electrical appliances', and 'house chores'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice, such as writing 'cacum cleaners' instead of 'vacuum cleaners' and 'spending time doing house chores' rather than 'time spent doing housework'. Some numbers and data references are awkwardly phrased, causing occasional difficulty for the reader, and the range of vocabulary remains restricted to basic descriptors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or awkward compound clauses. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with subject-verb agreement and prepositions, such as 'household having refrigerators was 0%' and 'increase to 40%'. Tense usage is also inconsistent when shifting between past years and present observations, as seen in 'Washing machines are 40% in 1920'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty and strain for the reader.
