Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover all parts of the task by mentioning both graphs and the trends for the appliances and housework hours. However, the information is somewhat limited and poorly developed. While the main features are touched upon, such as the overall upward trend for appliances and the downward trend for housework, some details are inaccurate or confusingly stated, such as describing the housework hours as '50%' instead of 50 hours per week. The overview at the end is very basic and lacks a clear summary of the overall trends. To move to a higher band, the response needs to more accurately report the data without confusing percentages and hours, and present a more thoroughly developed overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has some organizational structure with an introduction, body sentences, and a brief conclusion, but it lacks clear overall progression. Ideas tend to be listed mechanically rather than flowing logically from one to the next. Paragraphing is rudimentary, with the body of the response clumped into a single block of text. Cohesive devices are minimal and repetitive, relying heavily on basic conjunctions like 'and' or time markers like 'in 1920' and 'in 2019'. Pronoun referencing and substitution are underused, which makes the text feel disjointed. To improve coherence, you should group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive links to connect sentences smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with frequent misuses of words and terms. For instance, the student writes 'Number of houes of housework... is 50%', incorrectly applying a percentage sign to hours. There are also spelling mistakes such as 'Vaccum' instead of 'vacuum' and 'decreses' / 'increses' throughout the text. While the basic names of the appliances are present, the range of vocabulary is restricted to simple terms, and attempts at less common lexical items are absent. To achieve a higher band, you need to expand your range of vocabulary, avoid repetitive phrasing, pay closer attention to accurate word forms, and eliminate spelling errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with repetitive subject-verb-object patterns like 'The washing machine starts...' and 'Refrigerator is lowest...'. Attempts at complex structures are rare, and there are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('Refrigerator is lowest', 'Vaccum cleaner used by...'), incorrect verb tenses, and subject-verb agreement issues. Punctuation is also basic. These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in tracking the meaning. To progress, you need to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while maintaining tighter control over basic grammar rules, articles, and verb tenses.
