Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5
The response presents a very limited and partially inaccurate attempt at the prompt. While the student attempts to describe the trends, the coverage is incomplete and features numerous factual inaccuracies when compared to the source data. For instance, the text states that the refrigerator started at 3% and rose to 100% in 1980, whereas the data shows it started at 2% in 1920 and reached 55% in 1940. Furthermore, the second chart depicting the number of hours spent on housework per week is entirely neglected in the text, meaning an entire half of the visual data is ignored. The overview is also weak and lacks a clear summary of the main overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation attempted through paragraphing, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and repetitively, often leading to confusion (e.g., 'Then the percentage remained broadly unchanged', 'Before reching to 75% in 2019'). Paragraphing is disjointed, with body paragraphs failing to establish a coherent flow of information. Referencing is frequently unclear, leaving the reader struggling to follow which appliance is being discussed due to missing or inaccurate transitions. To improve, the student needs to ensure logical sequencing between sentences and paragraphs, using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive tools.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The lexical resource is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student makes several notable vocabulary errors and spelling mistakes, such as 'numorous' instead of 'number', 'vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', 'prodominant cetagory' instead of 'predominant category', 'trajentory' instead of 'trajectory', and 'reching' instead of 'reaching'. While there are attempts to use less common vocabulary like 'dominant category' and 'upward trajectory', inaccurate word forms and spelling errors frequently occur. To reach a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range and eliminate basic spelling and word choice mistakes that hinder precise communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent errors. Complex sentence attempts are often faulty, featuring missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and poor verb tense control. Examples of grammatical errors include 'percentage of household with electrical appliances' (missing plural), 'the numorous people spend time in doing housework in households in a one particular country' (severe structural breakdown), and 'was the dominant category in fromer years. After that rose steadily' (missing subject in the second clause). Frequent errors in basic sentence construction cause considerable difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar from reaching a higher level of control.
