Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts given illustrates the percentage of electrical appliances and the total amount of hours spent weekly on every household work between the years 1920 -2019.

Overall , the demand for all the electrical appliances including , vaccum cleaner and refreigerator had been increased significantly over the years while there was a slight fluctuation in demand for washing machine. Additionally, the number of hours of housework had been reduced drastically.

The demand for refrigerator was highest as it showed a sharp rise over the years from zero in 1920 to about 55%in 1940 and increased to 100% in 1980 and remained same till 2019. Additionally, demand for vaccum cleaner folloewed the same pattern as it 30% in 1920 and rose to 90% in 1980 and reached to 100% in 2000 and remained in maximum demand till 2019. However, the demand for washing machine was highest initially about 40% in 1920 which in later years increased to 60 % in 1960 and then showed a fall to approximately 65% in 1980. To add to that , it was demanded by 70% households and again it showed a rise to about 74% in 2019.

Additionally , the number of hours has been reduced significantly. Initially in 1920 , people used to spend 50 hours weekly on house work which included washing cloths , preparing meals and cleaning . While it had been reduced and reamined about 35 hours in 1940 , and 20 hours in 1940. The number had decresed to nearly 15 % in 1980 nad 2000 while it showed a further decline in 2019 and only 10 hours were spent in doing household work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. For instance, you correctly identify that refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership rose significantly to 100 percent by the end of the period, while housework hours declined steadily from 50 to 11 hours per week. However, some aspects are under-developed or contain minor data inaccuracies. For example, you state that refrigerator ownership started at zero in 1920, whereas the chart shows it at around 2 percent. Similarly, there is a slight misreading of the washing machine trend in 1980, describing a fall to approximately 65 percent when the figure on the chart is closer to 65 percent, but your narrative lacks a clear, cohesive summary of the overall relationship between appliance ownership and the reduction in housework hours, keeping the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and an overview. Information is generally organized logically, starting with appliance ownership and moving on to the time spent on housework. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate different data sets. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is not always completely clear. For instance, the transition 'To add to that' feels slightly awkward in an academic report, and repetitive use of transitional phrases like 'Additionally' at the beginning of multiple paragraphs weakens the flow. To reach a higher band, you should integrate cohesive devices more naturally and ensure that referencing between sentences guides the reader smoothly through the comparative data without relying on repetitive connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe trends using terms such as 'fluctuation', 'significantly', and 'drastically'. You make noticeable attempts to use less common items and varied verbs to describe movement, like 'rose', 'increased', and 'decline'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', 'refreigerator' instead of 'refrigerator', 'folloewed' instead of 'followed', and 'reamined' instead of 'remained'. Furthermore, phrasing like 'every household work' is unnatural and should be 'household chores' or 'housework'. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they highlight the need for greater precision in spelling and lexical control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using relative clauses and time markers such as 'between the years 1920 -2019' and 'while there was a slight fluctuation'. There are some errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage throughout the text. For example, you write 'The charts given illustrates', which has a subject-verb agreement error, and 'washing cloths' instead of 'washing clothes'. Additionally, punctuation and preposition placement need attention in sentences like 'it 30% in 1920', which is missing a verb, and 'nad' instead of 'and'. Your control of grammar allows the meaning to come across, but frequent minor slips in structure and tense consistency prevent you from achieving a higher band.
