Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally. While the student attempts to describe the main trends across the charts, the information is presented with significant inaccuracies and confusion regarding the data. For example, the student writes that 'the vacuum cleaner faced a sharp increasment of about 90%', which misinterprets the graph where the percentage reached 90% rather than increasing by that amount. Furthermore, key data points are misread or confused between categories, such as attributing the 40% figure incorrectly in the second paragraph. There is no mention of the housework hours chart at all in the body paragraphs, leaving a major part of the visual data completely unaddressed. To reach a higher level, the response needs to accurately report the figures shown in all parts of the visual prompt and ensure that key trends are clearly supported with correct data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response exhibits some organisation with an introduction and multiple body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression of information. The logical flow is hindered by inaccurate data reporting and confusing transitions. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs is often disjointed, jumping between different time periods and appliances without a clear narrative arc. Cohesive devices are used, but they are frequently repetitive or mechanically applied, such as 'As for the next 40 years' and 'On the other hand'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, as seen in the phrase 'made her far about 40% below'. To improve, the student needs to group information logically—such as by appliance or time period—and ensure that cohesive devices are used to build a natural, clear progression of ideas.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary items, such as 'domanied', 'dissipontment', and 'increasment', but these reveal frequent errors in word formation and spelling. There are also notable issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'dealed with decline' instead of 'experienced a decline', and 'come nick to nick' instead of 'neck and neck'. While the reader can generally understand the intended meaning despite these slips, the vocabulary control is weak. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary control, ensure correct word forms and derivations, and learn accurate collocations for describing statistical trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that turn out faulty. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'It is clear that some electrical machine' (plural agreement error) and 'Between 1960 and 1980 was a blooming decades' (copula and plural mismatch). Punctuation is also problematic, with erratic spacing around commas and full stops. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the grammar from being considered reliable. To progress, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction accuracy, ensuring subject-verb agreement, correct preposition use, and consistent control of past tense forms when describing historical data.
