Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting some key data but missing crucial comparisons and misinterpreting parts of the visual information. For instance, the writer states that the usage of washing machines was 'top most in the year 1920', which is inaccurate since refrigerators and vacuum cleaners started lower, and washing machines actually peaked later at 75%. Furthermore, the description of the trends often lacks clarity, such as stating that 'the second line chart follows the unusual pattern' without properly contextualising the downward trajectory of housework hours. While an overview is attempted, the details are limited, repetitive, and contain inaccuracies regarding specific figures, preventing the response from achieving a higher level of development.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation in the essay, with paragraphing used to separate the introduction, the two data bodies, and a conclusion, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes used inaccurately or repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on transitional phrases like 'To start with' and 'Additionally'. Referencing is occasionally unclear, as seen in sentences like 'The line chart of vacuum cleaner constantly grown', which confuses the data line with the physical chart itself. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to ensure smoother logical transitions between sentences and improve the overall flow of information.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and terms related to the visual data, but this leads to noticeable errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'top most', 'dived down', and the misspelling 'refrigorater'. Word choices are often repetitive, relying heavily on simple verbs like 'increased', 'went down', and 'remained the same'. These lexical errors and lack of precision cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from demonstrating a wider, more flexible range of vocabulary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements with frequent errors. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, and there are persistent mistakes with verb forms, articles, and prepositions, such as 'the usage of washing machine was' (missing articles and pluralisation) and 'number of housework' instead of 'hours of housework'. Frequent errors in grammar and punctuation are noticeable throughout the text, meaning that sentences with error-free control are sparse. To improve, the writer must focus on basic grammatical accuracy and constructing more varied, reliable sentence patterns.
