Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response only partially addresses the prompt because it falls well below the minimum word count of 150 words, containing only 102 words. While the student attempts to outline the main features of the line graphs, such as the overall rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours, the information presented is limited and under-developed. Key data points and comparisons between the appliances over the century are missing or inadequately explored. To achieve a higher band, the writer must ensure the length requirement is met and provide a more thorough, extended overview of the trends and specific data points shown in the charts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation evident in the response, beginning with an introduction that paraphrases the task and moving into a brief overview and body details. However, there is no clear overall progression due to the extreme brevity of the text. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, and paragraphing is underdeveloped, with the entire body squeezed into a single paragraph. Referencing is sometimes unclear, such as the abrupt transition between sentences. To improve, the writer needs to logically group information into clear paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices to smoothly connect sentences and ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for basic communication, featuring repetitive phrases such as 'highest proportion' and 'proportion increased'. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and phrasing, such as writing 'had the zero proprtion' instead of starting from zero or a very low percentage, and spelling errors like 'washinng' and 'annd'. Less common vocabulary is attempted with limited success. To reach a higher level, the writer should incorporate a wider range of precise lexical items related to data trends, avoid spelling mistakes, and refine word choices for greater naturalness and accuracy.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with occasional attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including missing articles ('washing machine', 'refrigerator'), punctuation errors with spacing around commas, and prepositional inaccuracies (e.g., 'in country' instead of 'in one country'). These frequent errors can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, use articles correctly, and incorporate error-free complex sentences.
