Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts, such as the overall rise in appliance ownership and the significant decline in housework hours. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, and certain details are slightly inaccurate or vague, such as stating that the fridge started from '0 percent' in 1920 when the data shows 2%, or claiming it stopped at '77%' in 2019. Key comparisons are attempted, but the development of ideas lacks precision. To move to a higher band, all data points should be reported accurately without exaggerating trends, and the relationships between appliance adoption and the reduction in housework time should be more clearly connected.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a discernible introduction and body paragraphs detailing the trends. However, the organisation suffers from mechanical and repetitive transitions. For instance, sentences frequently begin with formulaic or repetitive phrasing like 'The [appliance] had started from...', which creates a choppy flow. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and cohesive devices are limited and occasionally inaccurate, such as using 'THen' with a lowercase letter and erratic capitalization. Paragraphing is present, but the internal logical progression within paragraphs needs to be smoother. To achieve a higher level, you should use a wider variety of cohesive devices naturally and ensure that sentences flow logically from one to the next without abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through words like 'significantly', 'fluctuations', and 'reduction'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations, such as 'change in leadership of electrical equipments' instead of ownership of appliances, and 'time diverted' instead of time spent. Other phrasing issues include 'great increased of percentage' and 'went to rose of about 70%'. Spelling is generally acceptable, but word choice and collocation errors are frequent enough to detract from precision. To improve this criterion, you should focus on using correct noun-verb collocations and expanding your range of less common vocabulary with accurate word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures such as relative clauses and time clauses. There are, however, some noticeable errors in grammar, tense usage, and prepositions that recur throughout the text. Examples include 'The 2 line charts illustrated' (inappropriate past tense for a present visual introduction), 'houseworks' (uncountable noun treated as plural), 'the fridge was started' (incorrect passive voice), and 'stopped of 77%' (wrong preposition). These errors occur alongside correct sentences, and while communication is rarely impeded entirely, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the essay from reaching a higher descriptor level. Improving control over verb tenses, passive/active voice, and article usage will strengthen this area.
