Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of appliance ownership and time spent on housework. You provide a clear overview at the beginning and cover all the key data trends across the given time period. However, some ideas and comparisons are slightly under-developed or imprecise, such as stating that refrigerator ownership 'peaked around 1980' when it actually plateaued at 100% until 2019, and writing 'reached an over 60%' instead of a precise value for washing machines. To reach a higher band, ensure that all key data points are stated with greater precision and that comparisons between the rising appliance ownership and the falling housework hours are more fully explored.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression throughout. You successfully divide your essay into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs dedicated to appliance ownership and housework hours respectively. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, for instance through transition words like 'Additionally' and 'Later'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings, and referencing could be smoother. To achieve a higher band, you would need to ensure that cohesive links are used more flexibly and subtly, connecting sentences and paragraphs with greater natural flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, successfully conveying trends with terms like 'steadily', 'dramatic increased', and 'fluctuation'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, but there are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'numbers of housework' instead of 'number of hours of housework', 'dramatic increased' instead of 'dramatic increase', and 'into their households' instead of 'on housework'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present but they do not impede communication. To move to a higher band, you must demonstrate greater precision in word forms and use a wider, more natural range of less common lexical items appropriate for academic writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like 'People used to spend...' and relative clauses effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions ('percentage in ownership' instead of 'percentage of ownership', 'reached an over 60%' instead of 'reached over 60%'), subject-verb agreement issues ('the hours further decreases'), and preposition choices. However, these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning of your text. To reach a higher band, you need to produce a higher frequency of error-free sentences and demonstrate tighter control over complex grammatical structures and articles.
