Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given line graphs illustrate the use of different electrical applicances and time spent doing house chores in households of a country over the period of a century.

Overall, all three electrical appliances ownership demonstrated positive growth but the refrigerator usage in households experienced a dramatic rise during this period. Another striking feature is the time spent doing household continued to decrease during this period.

In 1920, the people who owned a refrigerator stood at zero but in just 60 years the figure reached at an exceptional level of 100 in 1960 and it remained so in coming years. Meanwhile, vacuum cleaner also witnessed a substantial rise during this time period from 30 percent of people in 1920 to 100 percent in 1980 and this trend continued. While the washing machine standing at highest point in 1920 with 40 percent showed steady growtg in initial 40 years but in next 40 years it demonstrated fluctuations ultimtaely rising to above 70 percent in 2019.

On the contrary, the time doing house hold work continued to decline from 1920 onward from initial 50 hours to reaching at 15 hours per weak in 1980 before ending at just 11 hours per weak.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview and reporting the main trends and comparisons for both electrical appliance ownership and the hours spent on housework. Key features are accurately identified, such as the dramatic rise in refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership to 100 percent by the end of the period, contrasted with the steady decline in housework hours. However, the response tends to over-generalise or slightly misstate certain data points, such as claiming refrigerator ownership stood at zero in 1920 (the chart shows a small percentage) and stating it reached 100 in 1960 rather than 1980. These minor inaccuracies place the response securely at the seventh band, as the main trends are well covered but some details lack full precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay demonstrates a clear overall progression, moving logically from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing appliance ownership and housework hours respectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Cohesive devices are employed to connect concepts, such as 'Overall', 'Meanwhile', and 'On the contrary'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in its transitions, and referencing is not always completely smooth, which prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. To achieve greater cohesion, the writer could integrate subordinate clauses and referencing pronouns more flexibly rather than relying on standard sequential connectors.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, attempting less common phrases such as 'positive growth', 'dramatic rise', and 'substantial rise'. However, there are notable lexical errors and spelling mistakes, including 'applicances' instead of appliances, 'growtg' for growth, and 'ultimtaely' for ultimately. Word choice is occasionally imprecise, such as 'the people who owned' rather than 'households with' and 'reached at', which shows limited control over collocations and prepositional patterns. These vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the performance firmly in the sixth band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasing choices, such as 'the time doing house hold work' instead of 'the time spent doing housework' and 'reaching at 15 hours per weak' instead of 'week'. Punctuation and article usage are also occasionally faulty. These errors persist throughout the text, but because they rarely impede communication and the basic meaning remains clear, the grammar sits comfortably at the sixth band. Incorporating more error-free complex sentences would help lift this criterion.
