Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses the task only partially, presenting a mix of accurate observations and significant data inaccuracies. While the writer attempts to provide an overview and cover the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours, several key features are misreported or confused. For instance, the statement that around 1% of people had a refrigerator in 1920 misreads the chart, which shows a starting point of roughly 2%, and subsequent claims regarding exact percentages do not align with the visual data. Furthermore, the selection of data is erratic, mixing appliance ownership figures with vague statements about money and user percentages, and the second chart showing hours of housework is only briefly and inadequately summarised at the very end. To move to a higher band, the writer must ensure all reported figures accurately reflect the source data and provide a more balanced, fully developed summary of both charts.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response displays some organization, but there is no clear overall progression, leading to a disjointed reading experience. The text lacks proper paragraphing, as sentences about different trends, appliances, and the second graph are lumped together into a single, confusing block of text. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately; words like 'However' and 'Finally' are dropped in without establishing a logical transition or contrast between ideas. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, such as in sentences like 'People spent more moeny on the Vacum cleaner and then substaintial number of people used to around 95%,' where it is difficult to determine what pronouns or subjects refer to. To improve, the writer needs to group related ideas into distinct paragraphs and use cohesive markers logically to guide the reader through the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical resource is limited and hindered by noticeable errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There are multiple spelling errors throughout the text, including 'housholds', 'washine', 'dlightly', 'pletaeu', 'regrigerator', 'owenship', 'vacum', 'moeny', and 'substaintial'. Word choice and collocation are also weak and unnatural, such as 'have the ownership of the regrigerator' instead of 'owned refrigerators' and 'users have saw' instead of 'was seen'. While the writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'significantly surged', 'plateau', and 'substantial', the high frequency of inaccurate word forms and spelling mistakes severely impacts communication. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their working vocabulary, pay closer attention to standard collocations, and eliminate basic spelling mistakes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader. There is a lack of control over basic grammar and tense usage, evident in awkward phrasing and tense shifts such as 'around 1% of the people have the ownership... and then climbed' and 'the significant number of people have the owenship'. Article usage is also problematic, as seen in 'the usage of all the electrical appliances' and 'for the washing machine users'. Complex sentence attempts are frequently faulty, leading to ungrammatical constructions like 'number of hours decreased gradually due to more usage of electrical appliances.' To progress, the writer needs to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms while improving basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and article selection.
