Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the trends and reporting the main features of both charts. The main features are appropriately highlighted, such as the peak ownership of appliances in 2019 and the inverse trend in the amount of housework hours. However, some details are slightly under-developed or less precise, such as the minor fluctuations in the washing machine trend, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. The overview accurately captures the overarching patterns across the 99-year period, ensuring that the visual data is adequately summarised and compared where relevant.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from an introduction to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing appliance ownership and housework hours respectively. Paragraphing is used adequately to group related ideas. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical, with simple sequencing devices like 'Firstly' and 'Secondly'. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional awkward phrasing in transitions prevents the progression from feeling entirely seamless, reflecting the characteristics of this level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items such as 'proportion', 'decline', and 'fluctuate'. However, there are noticeable lexical and word form errors throughout the text, such as 'vaccum' (spelling), 'household works' and 'housworks' (collocation and word form), and 'times were using' (inappropriate phrasing). While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they limit the score because the vocabulary lacks precision and contains frequent slips in word choice and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and time clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, particularly with articles, verb forms, and prepositions, such as 'ownership of washing machine' (missing article/plural), 'the houses who were using' (awkward subject-verb structure), and 'hit it's highest' (punctuation error with possessive pronoun). Despite these errors, the meaning remains mostly clear and they rarely impede communication, balancing simple structures with attempted complex forms.
