Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by reporting key features from both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours graph, such as the rise of refrigerators to 100% and the overall decline in housework hours. However, the coverage remains partial and limited. Certain data points are imprecise or awkwardly expressed, such as the statement that in 1920 the refrigerator 'have no use in houes', when the chart indicates 2%. The selection of data lacks a fully clear overview of the main trends across the entire 99-year period, resulting in a somewhat fragmented presentation of the information. To achieve a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer, more cohesive overview and ensure all key data trends are reported with greater accuracy.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text demonstrates some organisation, dividing the response into an introduction, body details, and a concluding point about housework hours. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the arrangement feels mechanical and disjointed. The use of cohesive devices is inadequate and often clumsy, relying on repetitive conjunctions like 'but' and 'and' rather than varied transitional phrases. Paragraphing is poorly handled, as the second paragraph runs together multiple distinct trends without adequate separation. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it hard to follow which appliance is being discussed. To improve, the writer should use distinct paragraphs for separate trends and employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are numerous noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation, such as 'illsturate' for illustrate, 'applinces' for appliances, 'houes' for houses, and 'mechine' for machine. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but these attempts are marred by inaccurate spelling and collocation, which can cause some difficulty for the reader. While basic terms related to data trends are present, the range lacks the precision required for a higher band. To elevate this criterion, the student must expand their control of spelling and use more precise vocabulary for describing statistical changes, such as 'significant growth' or 'gradual increase'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response employs a very limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on basic, run-on clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to severe structural issues and awkward phrasing, such as 'how the ownership changes of electrical applinces, and how many hours spend in house work'. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text, such as 'refrigerator have no use' and 'number of housrs of housework graph show'. These errors are frequent and often cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to focus on foundational grammar, ensuring proper punctuation, accurate tense consistency when describing historical data, and better control over simple and complex sentence boundaries.
