The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The two figures illustrate the trend of owning electrical appliances in a country and the amount of tiime sent doing housework in households over a time period of aaproximately 100 years.
The figures illustrates that the increasing trend of owning electrical appliances resulted in decreasing trend of the time spent in housework. The trend of owning electrical appliances was very low in 1920, however, the amount of time spent was the highest. On the other hand, in 2019, the trends changed and the trend of owning electrical appliances peaked in 2019, meanwhile, the time spent was reduced to lowest.
Starting from 1920, ownership of electrical appliances was at record low where refrigrators were at 0% while washing machines and vacuum cleaners were at 40% and 30% respectively. However, the number of hours spent per week, per household were 50. On the other hand, in 1960, the trend of owning electrical appliances increased sharply where refrigerators reached 90% while washing machines and vacuum cleaners remained at 60%. Meanwhile, the number of hours spent per week decreased sharply from 50 in 1920 to 20 in 1960. However, from 1960 onwards these trends kept changing consistantly where refrigrators and vacuum cleaners reached 100% while washing machines remained at 70 % after a little fluctuation in 1980. In contrast to electrical appliances, the number of hours spent kept decreasing consistantly, reaching 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both charts and making relevant comparisons. You provide a clear overview in the second paragraph, noting the inverse relationship between appliance ownership and housework hours. The data points cited, such as appliance ownership in 1920 and 1960, are generally accurate based on the visual data, though there are a few minor inaccuracies regarding specific percentages (for example, refrigerators in 1920 were around 2% rather than 0%). To reach the highest bands, you could ensure that every specific figure is stated with complete precision and develop the comparisons between individual appliances and time spent even further throughout the body paragraphs.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and logical progression, moving from an introduction and overview to detailed body paragraphs. You use appropriate cohesive devices such as 'However', 'On the other hand', and 'Meanwhile' to link ideas. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or repetitive, such as the repeated use of 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used adequately to separate the introduction, overview, and body details, but ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would elevate the flow of the writing to the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your lexical range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying trends and data changes using vocabulary such as 'increasing trend', 'peaked', and 'fluctuation'. However, there are noticeable spelling errors ('tiime', 'aapproximately', 'refrigrators', 'consistantly') and occasional minor inaccuracies in word choice. To achieve a higher band, you should aim to use a wider variety of less common vocabulary with greater precision and eliminate spelling mistakes that detract from the overall quality of the writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative constructions effectively. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as article omissions and minor subject-verb agreement slips (e.g., 'The figures illustrates'), but these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains clear. To move up to a higher band, you need to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and ensure rigorous control over punctuation and subject-verb agreement.
