Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the charts, providing an overview of the general trends. However, some ideas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, the discussion of the washing machine trend mentions it increased with one exception, but contains minor inaccuracies regarding specific figures and years. Similarly, the description of the vacuum cleaner states it was 30% in 2019 and increased to 100% in 2000, which reverses the chronological trend shown in the visual data. Despite these mechanical reporting errors, the core information regarding appliance ownership growth and the decline in housework hours is adequately outlined, ensuring the response covers the fundamental requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into logical paragraphs, separating the introduction, an overview, the appliance data, and the housework hours. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'In terms of', and 'Moreover'. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical, such as repetitive phrasing ('in 1920...', 'in 1940...', 'in 1960...') and awkward transitional links like 'At a glance'. Paragraphing is present and generally groups related points together, but logical progression within paragraphs occasionally falters due to scrambled chronological references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic trends using terms like 'drastically surge', 'dramatically rose', and 'peak point'. However, there are noticeable word-choice, collocation, and word-form errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'time spent pf housework', 'the value of owner' instead of 'rate of ownership', and 'untill' (spelling error). The writer attempts less common vocabulary with some inaccuracy, such as using 'escalate' and 'surge' with prepositional mismatches ('escalate and reached at around'). These errors do not impede overall communication but show a lack of precise lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures like relative clauses and comparative phrasing. However, there are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('had washing machine', 'reached at 10%'), incorrect prepositions ('spent 50 hours for housework' instead of 'on housework'), and passive/active voice confusion ('the data of washing machine was increased'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these grammatical errors persist, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the main points of the report.
