cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line graphs illustrates the proportion of households owning three distnict electrical appliances for a period of nearly a century, in a particular country. Alongside that, a graph also presents changes in time consumed in doing housework in a house on weekely basis for the same period.

Overall, the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner can be observed to have significant increase in proportion of households owning them during the period, while the ownership of washing machine has grown gradually, as percentage of households owning them in a specific country. And due this, significant decline in housework hours consumbed each week, can be noticed.

Firstly, the refrigerator can be noticed to have been part of all households today as its percentage for homes owning it has reached 100% by 2019, from that of approximately 0% owning these fridges back in year 1920. While, the proportion of families in a country owning the vaccum cleaner has also dramatically rose over the period, since in 1920 it was part of only 30% of houses, but, by the year 2000 it reached to all of recorded households in that country.

Further, the washing machine ownerships by households had also grown to 70% from just 40%, in period of 1920 to 1960s, before it fell down to nearly 60% in 1980. However, this electrical appliance become again demanding as data shows that, the proportion of households owning this reached to over 70% by end of 2019. On the other hand, one thing that kept on decreasing due to this increase in electrical appliance ownerships by households, was that of time it ussually took to do housework each week. By the data, it can be seen that in period of 60 years, starting from 1920 to ending in 1980s, the housework hours consumbed fell by approximately 35 hours each week. later on by the end of 2019s the time savings further rose by nearly 5 more hours, as the households had increasing hold over ownership of electrical appliances in recent years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main trends and making relevant comparisons across the given data. You accurately highlighted the upward trajectories of the three electrical appliances alongside the inverse trend in housework hours. Your overview successfully captures the broader picture of increased appliance adoption and the corresponding decline in household labor. While some details, such as the exact percentages at intermediate years, could be expanded further, the core information is clearly presented and effectively supported by figures from the charts, such as refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching 100% by 2019. To reach the highest bands, you could push your analysis further by integrating the datasets more tightly, directly contrasting the rate of appliance adoption with the specific milestones in the reduction of weekly housework hours.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

Your writing displays a clear overall progression and logical arrangement of information, making the text easy to follow. You introduce the graphics and provide an overview in the opening paragraphs, then dedicate subsequent paragraphs to specific appliance trends and housework hours. However, your cohesion sometimes feels slightly mechanical or repetitive, relying heavily on transitional phrases like 'Firstly', 'Further', and 'On the other hand'. While referencing is generally clear, paragraphing could be managed more flexibly. To achieve higher bands, ensure that cohesive devices are used more naturally and that sentences flow into one another smoothly without relying on formulaic sequencing markers.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary range is adequate to convey the main features of the charts, and you successfully attempt some less common lexical items such as 'proportion', 'trajectories', and 'appliance ownerships'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice inaccuracies throughout your text, including 'distnict', 'weekely', 'consumbed', and 'vaccum'. Phrases like 'increasing hold over ownership' are awkward and display limited control over collocation. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict your score. To improve, you should focus on expanding your precise vocabulary for describing statistical changes and rigorously check your spelling of common words like 'vacuum' and 'consumed'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, attempting various subordinate clauses and compound sentences. There are several instances of grammatical errors, particularly with articles, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'The line graphs illustrates' (agreement error), 'for a period of nearly a century' (unnecessary article usage in places), and 'this electrical appliance become again demanding' (tense and word form issues). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but frequent minor errors in syntax and agreement persist. To move up to the next band, you need to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over subject-verb agreement and prepositional phrases within your grammatical patterns.
