Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word length requirement of 150 words, as it contains only 101 words, with 25 words directly copied from the prompt. While the student attempts to address the task by mentioning appliances and housework hours, the information provided is very limited, fragmentary, and contains inaccurate data points, such as stating refrigerator ownership started at 0% in 1920 and confusing appliance percentages with time spent. To move up, the response needs to fully cover all parts of the visual data with accurate figures and meet the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The organisation of information is minimal and lacks a clear overall progression. The response is divided into short, disjointed paragraphs, and sentences are abruptly linked without adequate or accurate cohesive devices. References to the data are confusing, such as abrupt shifts between appliances and hours without logical sequencing. To improve, the student should use logical paragraphing—such as an introduction, an overview, and clearly structured body paragraphs—along with appropriate transitional markers to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple terms like "increase", "decrease", and "stable". There are notable word choice and spelling errors, such as "horus" for hours, "hulouseholds" for households, and awkward phrasing like "spending time in machine". These lexical limitations and errors restrict the precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. To achieve a higher band, the student must employ a wider range of vocabulary with accurate spelling, appropriate collocations, and precise descriptive verbs and nouns to report trends.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, consisting mainly of faulty simple sentences and attempted complex structures that contain frequent errors. Examples include missing articles and auxiliary verbs ("The line graph illustrate below show"), incorrect prepositions and tense usage ("spending time in machine was increase"), and severe punctuation issues with run-on phrasing. These errors frequently impede communication. To progress, the student needs to demonstrate better control over basic sentence structures, subject-verb agreement, and accurate tense application when describing historical data.
