Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response falls slightly short of the minimum word count requirement, which impacts the overall development of the task. While the student attempts to present an overview of the charts, the information reported is only partial and contains inaccuracies regarding data representation. For instance, the reference to the refrigerator usage starting at zero in 1920 and reaching 100 percent in 1980 misreads the actual trend, and the description of the washing machine percentages contains errors, such as claiming it decreased to 55 percent in 1980 when the data indicates 65 percent. The second graph concerning housework hours is mentioned only briefly at the end with a very general statement rather than a thorough reporting of key features and comparisons. To improve, the writer needs to ensure all data points are read accurately from the visual prompts and that both charts receive balanced coverage with a clear summary.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response by addressing the graphs sequentially, but the overall progression lacks clarity and a cohesive structure. The text is written as a single dense block with virtually no paragraphing, which makes the flow difficult to follow. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes repetitive or misused, such as starting consecutive sentences with repetitive phrases like 'the next twenty years' or 'in 1940, It increased'. Furthermore, referencing between sentences is occasionally unclear, as seen in abrupt transitions between data points without logical connectors. To achieve a higher band, the writer should divide the text into logical paragraphs—such as an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the different charts—and employ a wider range of appropriate cohesive devices to link ideas smoothly.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, relying heavily on simple phrasing such as 'uses of', 'increased', and 'reached'. There are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'electrical compliances' instead of 'electrical appliances' and 'the uses of refrigerator used' which demonstrates poor word form and collocation. Spelling errors and slips, such as 'vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', also detract from the quality of the writing. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate the basic trends, and attempts at less common lexical items are largely absent or incorrect. To improve, the writer should build a stronger repertoire of topic-specific vocabulary, incorporating precise synonyms for rise and fall, and pay closer attention to correct word forms and spelling.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures employed are predominantly simple, with frequent attempts at complex or compound sentences that result in noticeable errors. There is a lack of variety in sentence patterns, and frequent errors occur in verb tenses, prepositions, and article usage—for example, omitting necessary articles ('in 1920 it used only 30% household') and faulty subject-verb agreement or missing verbs ('the uses of refrigerator used in 1920 zero'). Punctuation is also poorly managed, with missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences and run-on structures. These frequent errors can cause difficulty and confusion for the reader. To move up to a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence structures while exercising much tighter control over basic grammatical rules and punctuation.
