Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons. Note that 23 words copied directly from the prompt were not counted toward the overall length, but the response still fully satisfies requirements. An appropriate overview is provided, highlighting the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points are selected and reported, such as refrigerators reaching full household ownership by 1980 and weekly housework hours dropping significantly. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise or slightly misread isolated figures (for instance, reporting housework hours in percentages rather than actual hours), which keeps the response at this band rather than a higher one. Ideas are generally well-supported with data from the visual prompts, though some figures contain minor inaccuracies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression with a logical arrangement of information. The essay is divided into logical paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to specific appliance ownership trends and finally to housework hours. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Looking first at', and 'Turning to number of hours per week'. However, referencing and cohesion occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or repetitive, and some transitions are slightly abrupt. For example, linking long clauses within the body paragraphs could be smoother. This meets the criteria for a clear logical flow and shows partial elements of higher organisational skill, but minor lapses in mechanical cohesion prevent it from reaching the next level.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'fluctuation', 'substantially', and 'dramatically'. However, there are noticeable word-choice errors and awkward collocations that impact precision, such as 'reached full housld ownership' and 'washing michine'. Spelling errors ('housld', 'michine', 'Moderatly', 'dramaticaly', 'toroughout') also occur. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main message clearly, the presence of these recurring lexical inaccuracies and spelling slips restricts the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are some error-free sentences, but frequent grammatical and punctuation errors persist throughout the text. Issues include missing prepositions or incorrect verb forms in phrases like 'increased substantially 90%' and 'has been decreased', as well as punctuation and article omissions. These errors occasionally disrupt the flow of reading, though they rarely impede overall communication. The control of grammar and punctuation needs to be more consistent, with fewer structural errors, to achieve a higher band.
