Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided line graph demonstrates the information about the alter in ownership of electrical appliances and the lenght of time spent on doing housework in a particular nation between the year 1920 and 2019

Looking from an overall prespective,it is vivid that, ownership of all three electrical appliances increased, while the time spent on housework fell. Refrigerators and vacuum clearer became universal by the end of the period.

In detailed analysis, in 1920,washing machines were owned by about 40 percent of households, compared with 30 percent of vacuum cleaners and only 5 percent of refrigerotors. By 1940, washing machine ownership had risen to around 60 percent , while refrigerators and vacuum cleaner reached approximately 50% and 55% respectively. Refrigerato ownership then increased rapidly, reaching abouT 90% in 1960 and 100% in 1980. Vacuum cleaner also rose steadily to around 100% in 2000. Washing machine ownership fluctuated slightly but finished at about 85%

Meanwhile, housework decreased from 50 hours per week in 1920 to around 30 hours in 1960.

before remaining fairly stable at about 25-30 hours until 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by reporting both the changes in appliance ownership and the time spent on housework, and it provides an overview. However, some parts of the task are handled more successfully than others, and certain details are inaccurate or under-developed. For example, the student states that in 1920 washing machines were owned by 40 percent and refrigerators by only 5 percent, whereas the graph shows refrigerators at 2 percent and washing machines at 40 percent, which is acceptable, but the final data point for washing machines is misread as 85 percent instead of approximately 75 percent. Furthermore, the description of housework hours contains inaccuracies, claiming they remained stable at 25-30 hours until 2019, while the graph clearly indicates they fell to 11 hours. These inaccurate data citations and partially developed trends keep the response at this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a coherent overall arrangement, with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs dedicated to the detailed analysis. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The transition phrases such as 'Looking from an overall prespective,it is vivid that' and 'In detailed analysis' feel unnatural and awkward. Paragraphing is attempted, but the division between body paragraphs leads to a disjointed handling of the data. Referencing and logical progression are occasionally hindered by punctuation errors, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'prespective,it'), and some sentences lack smooth cohesive ties to the ones preceding them.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'universal', 'fluctuated', and 'respectively'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors throughout the text, including 'alter' instead of 'alteration', 'lenght', 'prespective', 'vivid' instead of 'evident', and repeated misspellings like 'refrigerotors' and 'Refrigerato'. There is also a spelling error with 'vacuum clearer'. While these vocabulary and spelling errors do not completely impede communication, their frequency prevents the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses and comparative constructions. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Punctuation is weak, notably with missing terminal periods, missing spaces after commas, and a dangling fragment in the final paragraph starting with 'before remaining fairly stable'. There are also minor article omissions and agreement slips. While these errors rarely impede overall communication, the presence of frequent inaccuracies in basic sentence boundaries and punctuation structures keeps the grammar score at this level.
