Student answer (Band 6.0)

The charts illustrate a comparison - between the trends of owning electrical instruments with the time consumed in doing household chores - in a particular country from the years 1920 and 2019.

Overall, previously before completely adapting to technology that contributes to daily household work, people manually worked as shown in the housework graph. In the appliances graph it demonstrates an increased percentage of using household appliances such as refrigerator, washing machine and a vacuum cleaner.

In the year 1920, on average people would spend 50 hours a week for just housework per household. Gradually as the adaption of technological appliances grew more helpful, the number of housework per unit faced a substantial decline as demonstrated by the graph, with people only spending about 10 hours in 2019.

Furthermore, the use of specific appliance varied throughout the years. Notably, refrigerator begun from 0, whereas a washing machine and vacuum cleaner had been in use for approximately 30-40% households. Consequently as this technology contributed to peoples' lives to be more productive, the percentage of household relying on it greatly skyrocketed. Refrigerator grew up until 100% in 60 years, with the use of vacuum cleaner slowly climbing up to 100% over the course of 40 years. On the other hand, use of washing machine faced a fluctuating use with minor decline between 1960 and 1980.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response satisfies the requirements of a Band 6.5 by addressing all parts of the task and presenting a clear overview of the main trends. The student successfully identifies the core patterns, such as the overall inverse relationship between rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours. Key data points are reported, such as the drop in housework from 50 hours in 1920 to 11 hours in 2019, and the eventual 100% saturation for refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. However, the response stops short of a full Band 7 because some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies. For instance, stating that the refrigerator 'begun from 0' is slightly imprecise since the graph shows it starting at 2%, and the discussion of the washing machine's fluctuations could have been integrated more smoothly with the broader comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay achieves a coherent overall arrangement and earns a Band 6.0 due to logical progression and generally clear paragraphing. The response is divided into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the housework hours and appliance ownership data. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Gradually', 'Furthermore', and 'Consequently'. However, cohesion can sometimes feel mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen in the transition phrases and referencing. For example, 'the number of housework per unit' is imprecise and disrupts the flow of information. To reach a higher band, the student needs to ensure that logical relationships between sentences are managed with greater flexibility and that referencing remains consistently clear throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Lexical resource sits at a Band 6.0, demonstrating an adequate vocabulary range for the task. The student successfully attempts less common vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'substantial decline', 'fluctuating', and 'skyrocketed'. However, there are noticeable word-choice and collocation errors that prevent the score from rising further, such as 'electrical instruments' instead of 'electrical appliances', 'the number of housework', and 'adaption' instead of 'adoption'. Spelling and word-form errors are also present, including 'refrigerator begun from 0' (instead of began) and 'percentage of household relying' (instead of households). These minor lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they highlight the limitations in precision and control required for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

Grammatical range and accuracy is evaluated at a Band 5.5, reflecting a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with frequent errors. The student attempts complex structures, such as relative clauses and subordinate time clauses (e.g., 'previously before completely adapting to technology that contributes to daily household work'), but these often result in awkward phrasing or structural awkwardness. There are several recurring grammatical errors, including preposition misuse ('spend 50 hours a week for just housework'), tense inconsistencies ('refrigerator begun'), and article errors. While the meaning is generally communicated, the frequency of these grammatical slips means that error-free sentences are not sustained consistently enough to merit a higher band.
