Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of both charts and highlighting key features such as the peak ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reaching 100%, and the steady decline in housework hours. However, some parts of the response are under-developed or contain inaccuracies regarding the data. For instance, the student states that in 1920 the vacuum cleaner had a 0 percent contribution, whereas the chart shows it at 30 percent, and mistakes are made with the units for hours of housework, referring to them as percentages. To reach a higher band, all details should be reported with complete accuracy and data points should be interpreted correctly without confusing units.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response exhibits a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the answer into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for each chart. Information and ideas are generally organized logically. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, as seen in awkward transitions like 'Moreover, in 2019' and 'in 1920, there was the highest ratio...'. Referencing and logical progression between sentences could be smoother. To achieve a higher level, cohesive devices should be used more flexibly and naturally, and paragraphing should manage the flow of information without disjointed transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive phrases such as 'proportion of the households', 'trend decreased significantly', and 'highest ratio'. Nevertheless, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and typos throughout the text, such as 'ariation' instead of variation, 'time spent in doing' instead of time spent doing, and treating 'hours per week' as percentages. These vocabulary and spelling inaccuracies do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the response to this level. To improve, the writer needs to enhance precision in word choice and eliminate spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, particularly with articles, prepositions, and verb forms. Examples include missing articles ('washing machine was', 'refrigerator had same and highest proportion'), incorrect prepositions ('at level of 75%', 'at 10%'), and awkward clause structures ('as moved for the next years'). These errors rarely impede communication, but their persistent presence means the majority of sentences are not error-free. To move up, the writer should focus on greater accuracy in article usage, subject-verb agreement, and prepositional phrases.
