Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons, which places it at this level. You successfully outline the overall trends—the rise in appliance ownership and the decline in housework hours—and provide specific data points, such as mentioning that refrigerator buyers started at 2 percent in 1920 and reached 100 percent later on. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others, and a few details are slightly inaccurate, such as stating that weekly hours ended up with 10 hours when the graph shows approximately 11. To reach a higher standard, ensure all data points are cited with greater precision and extend the discussion of key trends by drawing sharper comparisons between the different appliances.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that separate the appliance data from the housework hours. You make use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through the data, employing transition markers like 'Overall', 'In 1920', and 'In contrast'. Nevertheless, cohesion is at times mechanical or somewhat faulty, as seen in the phrasing 'By the year 1940, there was a massive rise in the refrigerator with more than 50%', which lacks clear referencing for what the percentage applies to. Paragraphing is present, but grouping the information more logically—perhaps combining the appliance trends into a more unified narrative—would improve the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive terms such as 'significant increase', 'fluctuations', and 'constantly dropped'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors throughout the text, such as using 'buyers' instead of 'ownership' or 'households with appliances', misspelling 'vaccum cleaner' instead of vacuum, and writing 'househods' and 'til'. These inaccuracies do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on precise word choice related to data reporting and check your spelling for common terms like vacuum and households.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing includes a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating your ability to structure sentences with introductory clauses and relative contrasts. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, but they rarely impede communication. Examples of grammatical slips include 'the time spent on these item is reduced' (plural/singular agreement), 'rise in the refrigerator' (missing noun head), and comma splices such as 'by the year 1960, this trend showed fluctuations'. To move up to the next band, you should aim for greater control over complex sentence patterns, ensure correct subject-verb agreement, and refine your use of articles and prepositions.
