Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, stopping at only 114 words. Additionally, it addresses the task only partially and covers limited information. The writing omits any mention of the second chart regarding the number of hours spent on housework, which is a major part of the prompt. While the student attempts to report some data for the refrigerator and washing machine, the details contain inaccuracies, such as misstating the starting year figure for refrigerators and describing the timeline incorrectly. The attempt to provide an overview simply repeats the introduction without giving a clear summary of the main trends. To improve, the response must cover all parts of the visual data, including the housework hours, and provide a comprehensive overview of the overall trends.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
There is some basic organisation attempted through introductory framing and transitional phrases like 'Firslty', but the overall progression of information is weak. The writing lacks a cohesive structure, and paragraphing is inadequate due to the short and fragmented text. Referencing is also confusing, as seen when the student introduces the washing machine data by mentioning the refrigerator instead. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to group related information logically, use cohesive devices more accurately, and ensure that paragraphs are properly developed with clear signposting of the relationships between different data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, though it is minimally adequate to convey basic information. There are noticeable errors in word choice, such as spelling 'Vaccum' instead of 'vacuum', and confusing appliances, like writing 'use of refrigerator' when discussing washing machines. The range of vocabulary is restricted to simple terms, and attempts at less common lexical items are either absent or inaccurate. To progress, the student should expand their range of vocabulary to describe trends precisely, using varied synonyms and collocations suited for academic data reporting while ensuring correct spelling and word form.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The text shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors. There are issues with verb tenses and forms, such as 'This chart showed' instead of 'shows', and 'which increase sharply' where past tense agreement is required. Prepositional use is also flawed, as seen in phrases like 'at 20% in 1920'. Punctuation errors are present, including missing full stops and unnecessary commas. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex grammatical structures with accurate control over tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions.
