Student answer (Band 6.5)

The line chart illustrates the changes in ownershp of electrical appliances and the table shows the number of hours of work done in homes in a country between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, the trend of owning electrical appliances increased from 1920 to 2019. Refrigerators showed a signicant increase of the other two appliances. The tables shows that amount of hours spent in the household chores per week declined towards the end.

Ownership of refrigerators surged from 1920 to 2019. Starting from no refrigerator in any house to ending at a refrigerator at every house, it showed an increasing trend. Vaccum cleaners were present in 30 percent homes in 1920 and rose gradually to be available at every house in 2000. Furthermore, the ownership of washing machines started at 40 percent which was among top of the other two in 1920 and stayed behind both of them in 2019 at around 71 percent.

The table shows that in 1920, 50 hours in a week were spent on housework. These hours decreased sharply to 20 hours per week at 1960. Later on, they decreased further before staying steady between 1980 and 2000.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the provided data. The overview correctly highlights the general upward trend in appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. However, some areas are slightly under-developed; for instance, the description of the trends lacks full integration of all data points for every decade, and minor details such as refrigerator ownership reaching 100 percent in 1980 are expressed somewhat loosely ("starting from no refrigerator in any house to ending at a refrigerator at every house"). Nevertheless, the response clearly selects and reports key features well enough to meet the expectations of this band level while showing glimpses of more extended reporting required for higher bands.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs addressing appliance ownership and housework hours respectively. Progression is generally logical, moving from the introduction of the visuals to overall trends and specific data. However, cohesion within and between sentences is occasionally mechanical or faulty, such as the abrupt transition in the second paragraph ("The tables shows that amount of hours...") and repetitive referencing. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and while some cohesive devices are simple, they successfully guide the reader through the main comparisons and trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as "surged," "gradually," and "steady." However, there are notable spelling errors and inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as "ownershp" instead of ownership, "signicant" instead of significant, and "Vaccum" instead of vacuum. Additionally, phrases like "increased of the other two appliances" and "among top of the other two" lack precision and natural collocation. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score, as control over less common vocabulary and spelling needs to be more consistent for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as subordinate clauses ("Starting from no refrigerator in any house to ending at a refrigerator at every house") and comparative constructions. There are some grammatical errors in article usage, prepositional phrases, and subject-verb agreement, such as "The tables shows that amount of hours spent in the household chores..." and "at 1960" instead of in 1960. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended comparisons easily. The punctuation is generally handled well enough to ensure sentence boundaries remain clear.
