Student answer (Band 6.0)
The lines graphs illustrate the number of different electrical appliances bought from 1920 to 2019 and number of hours these appliance used in household in a specific country during same period.
Overall, all machines (Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner) experienced growth. However the usage hours of these electrical devices were declined dramatically over the period of time.
At the starting point (1920), Washing machines were the most preferred items (40%) followed by Vacuum cleaners at 30%. Washing machines grew steadily over time, reaching at 70% in 1960, after a slight drop finished at almost 73% in 2019. However vacuum cleaner experienced constant increase from start (1920) to 2000 (reaching at 100%), and plateaued at 100% until the end of period (2019).
In contrast, refrigerators were the least used product in 1920. After a dramatic increase they reached at perfect 100% in 1980. Moreover, remained at 100% until very end of the period (2019).
On the other hand, hourly usage of these machines decreased steadily from 50 hours per week to 20 hours until 1960. Afterwards in went under slight declines until it reached at its lowest point of period at 10 hours a week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the requirements of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of both the appliance ownership chart and the housework hours graph, successfully bridging into the next band by offering clear comparisons and an overview of the main trends. You correctly noted that all three appliances increased in popularity while housework hours decreased. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed or less fully explained, such as the minor fluctuations in washing machine ownership between 1940 and 2000, which prevents the response from reaching the highest tiers. To improve further, ensure that all key data points, such as specific peak years and intersections, are highlighted with equal analytical depth.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory paraphrase to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing appliance ownership and housework hours respectively. You make use of cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'However', 'At the starting point', and 'In contrast' to guide the reader through the data. Nonetheless, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, as seen with transitions like 'Afterwards in went under slight declines'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the response, but referencing and logical flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a fully seamless structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey the main trends effectively using terms like 'growth', 'steadily', 'plateaued', and 'dramatic increase'. However, there are noticeable lexical and collocation errors that reflect this band level, such as 'number of hours these appliance used in household' instead of 'spent doing housework', and misuse of prepositions like 'reaching at' instead of 'reaching'. Spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'hourly usage' instead of 'number of hours', do not impede overall communication, but incorporating more precise and less common academic vocabulary with accurate collocations would elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, effectively utilising past tenses to describe historical trends. There are, however, some recurring grammatical and mechanical errors, such as missing articles ('the lines graphs', 'start'), incorrect verb forms ('appliance used' instead of 'appliances were used'), and awkward phrasing like 'in went under slight declines'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while these errors do not impede communication, they do occur with some regularity. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement, proper article usage, and precise prepositional patterns within complex structures.
