Student answer (Band 7.0)
The line graphs illustrate the changes in ownership of electrical appliances ( washing machine,Refrigerator and vacuum cleaner) and the amount of time spend on doing housework in households in one country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the ownership of electrical appliances increased gradually over the period, while the amount of time spent doing housework decreased considerably. By 2019, almost all households owned the three appliances shown in the chart.
In 1920, about 40% of households had a washing machine, followed by vacuum cleaners, at 30%, while almost no homes owned a refrigerator. By 1940, washing machines had become the most common appliance at around 60%, whereas both refrigerators and vacuum cleaners were owned by approximately 50% of households. In 1960, refrigerator ownership increase sharply to 90%, overtaking the other two appliances. It reached 100% in 1980 and remained constant until 2019. Vacuum cleaner ownership increased steadily from 30% in 1920 to 100% by 2000. In contrast, washing machine ownership incline slowly, from 40% to 70% in 1920 and 1960, after that year, its figure was falling slightly to around 65% in 1980 before recovering to about 75% in 2019.
At the same time, the average time spent on housework decrease continuously. Households spent around 50 hours per week on housework in 1920, which dropped to 35 hours in 1940 and 20 hours in 1960. This figure continued to decline to about 15 hours in 1980 and 2000, before reaching only 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview and reporting the main features of both charts. Key trends in appliance ownership and housework hours are accurately identified and supported with specific data points, such as the 100% saturation of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners by 2000 and 1980 respectively. Comparisons are appropriately made between the different appliances and over time, meeting the expectations for a well-supported response. The selection of data is generally accurate and well-synthesised, showing a strong grasp of the visual information provided. To reach the highest bands, the analysis could incorporate even sharper grouping of data or slightly more insightful synthesis across both datasets.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information about appliance ownership is grouped together in the second and third paragraphs, while the data on housework hours is logically separated into the final paragraph. Cohesive devices such as 'while', 'in contrast', and 'at the same time' are used effectively to connect ideas and signal transitions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. While cohesion is generally clear and natural, occasional mechanical transitions or slightly tighter referencing could elevate the response further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'saturation', 'overtaking', 'recovering', and 'decline'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and word formation, such as 'amount of time spend' (should be 'spent'), 'increase sharply' (should be 'increased sharply'), and 'ownership incline slowly' (should be 'inlined' or 'increased slowly'). Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they rarely impede communication, allowing the response to comfortably sit at the given band. To improve, the student should focus on precise word forms and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with good control over past tense narratives and comparative structures. There are frequent error-free sentences, such as 'By 2019, almost all households owned the three appliances shown in the chart.' However, some grammatical errors persist, including missing articles and tense inconsistencies, such as 'ownership increase sharply' instead of 'increased sharply' and punctuation issues around parenthetical elements. These errors rarely impede communication, reflecting a solid command of basic and complex structures with occasional slips.
