Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by describing the trends in household electrical appliance ownership and hours of housework, but it only partially covers the data. The overview is weak, consisting of a simple generalisation without capturing the broader picture across the full period. Furthermore, several key features and figures are misread or inaccurately reported, such as stating that the vacuum cleaner ownership in 1920 was zero (whereas the data shows 30%), and describing the 1960 housework hours as '20%' instead of 20 hours per week. Ideas are limited and under-developed, lacking a comprehensive comparison across the categories. To move to a higher band, the response must accurately report the visual data without factual errors and provide a clear, well-supported overview of the main trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The text demonstrates some organisation by breaking information into paragraphs, but there is a lack of clear overall progression. The movement between sentences and ideas feels disjointed because cohesive devices are either absent, repetitive, or inaccurate. For instance, the transition between discussing appliance percentages and housework hours lacks a smooth logical bridge. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal paragraph structure is weak, leading to a somewhat fragmented reading experience. To improve, the writer needs to ensure logical sequencing of ideas and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader clearly through the comparison of the charts.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are numerous word choice, spelling, and word form errors throughout the response, such as writing 'appliences', 'refrigeretor', 'vaccum', 'beggining', 'everey', and 'sequencely'. These errors, combined with unnatural collocations like 'crosses above' or 'low down to', occasionally cause strain for the reader. The range of vocabulary is restricted mostly to basic terms. To achieve a higher score, the writer must expand their lexical repertoire to include more precise, less common vocabulary and improve spelling and word formation accuracy significantly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Grammatical control is limited, featuring a restricted range of sentence structures. When the writer attempts complex sentences, they are often faulty, such as in the opening sentence: 'The bar chart illustrate a figure of changes...', which contains a subject-verb agreement error. Frequent errors occur in articles, prepositions, and verb tenses, including 'hours of housework is decreasing' and 'it touches to nearly 10%'. Punctuation is also problematic, with irregular spacing around commas and periods. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer needs to focus on mastering basic sentence structures, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and reducing the frequency of grammatical errors.
