Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the charts showing appliance ownership and housework hours, the overview and key features are poorly selected and confused. For instance, the opening sentences contain garbled descriptions and misinterpret the data, stating that washing machine ownership 'declinedd for 10% in 1960 to 1980', whereas the graph shows it dipping slightly before rising. The reporting of data is fragmented and lacks clarity, with vague references like 'Neligible trend was seen'. Furthermore, the summary of the second graph regarding housework hours is confusingly expressed. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present a clearer, more accurate overview of the main trends without getting bogged down in disjointed and incorrect data points.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with an introduction and separate paragraphs for the different charts, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of each paragraph lacks logical sequencing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'To start with' and 'Accoding to another line graphs', which fail to guide the reader smoothly through the comparison of trends. Referencing is also weak, making it difficult to follow which appliance or data set is being discussed from sentence to sentence. To improve, the student should ensure that ideas are connected logically with appropriate transition markers and that referencing between sentences is clear and precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The lexical resource is limited and heavily impeded by frequent spelling and word-choice errors. The student attempts less common vocabulary, but words are frequently misspelled or misused, such as 'houshold', 'persantage', 'vacum cliner', 'Neligible', and 'Refgirator'. Collocations are also weak, for example, 'rose a rapidly increase' and 'application increase rapidly time to time'. These numerous errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning. To achieve a higher band, the writer must expand their vocabulary range, learn the correct spelling of common task-specific terms, and focus on accurate word formation and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is very limited, relying heavily on simple structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are consistently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the response, including issues with verb tenses, missing prepositions, and faulty sentence construction, such as 'the number of hours per week of household per week in 1920, than a suden downfall was seen in from 1940 to 1980'. Subject-verb agreement and article use are also problematic. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to practise forming accurate simple and complex sentences, paying close attention to basic grammatical rules, verb forms, and sentence boundaries.
