cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The two line charts illustrate the proportion of houses who owns three electrical appliances such as Washing machine, Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner and the total amount of time in hours per week spent a household on housework from 1920 to 2019.

Overall, the figures of three appliances dramatically increased during the years. However, the number of hours spent doing housework gradually decreased. Although the figure for washing machine ranked first in 1920, it stood at the bottom of the trend.

Looking at the appliance ownership, In 1920, the washing machine was the most common appliance. owned by 40% of household. Vacuum cleaners were second at 30%, while refrigerators were almost non-existent at just 2%. However, refrigerator ownership rose dramatically over the decades, reaching 100% in 1980. Vacuum cleaner ownership also increased steadily, hitting 100% at 2000. Moreover, washing machine ownership grew more slowly, reaching to 70% in 1960 before dipping slightly to 65% in 1980 and then rising to 75% by 2019.

In terms of housework, households spent 50 hours per week doing different types of work such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning in 1920. This figure dropped sharply to nearly 20% only in 1960. Over the remaining years, the time spent om housework continued to fall gradually, reaching a low of just over 10 hours per week in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by covering both charts comprehensively. The main features are identified and reported well, such as the overall rise in appliance ownership alongside the significant drop in weekly housework hours. Key data points are cited accurately, noting how refrigerator and vacuum cleaner ownership reached 100 percent by the end of the period, while washing machines followed a different trajectory. Comparisons between appliances in 1920 are also well made. However, the response tends to over-generalise slightly in the second paragraph overview when stating that the washing machine 'stood at the bottom of the trend' by 2019, which lacks precision since its figure was actually 75 percent and only lowest relative to the other two fully saturated appliances. To reach a higher band, the overview needs to be slightly more nuanced in capturing all major trends without minor descriptive inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the response. The information is divided sensibly into an introduction, an overview paragraph, a detailed body paragraph for appliance ownership, and a final paragraph dedicated to housework hours. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, with transitional phrases like 'Overall', 'Looking at the appliance ownership', and 'In terms of housework' guiding the reader smoothly through the text. Referencing is generally clear, though paragraphing and transitions could be slightly more refined. To move further up the scale, the integration of cohesive links could feel more natural and less mechanical, avoiding occasional awkward phrasing at the start of sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and lexical phrases such as 'proportion', 'non-existent', and 'dipping slightly'. There is a good awareness of collocation and style when describing trends, using verbs and adverbs like 'rose dramatically', 'increased steadily', and 'dropped sharply'. However, there are some noticeable lexical and collocational errors that prevent a higher score, such as 'proportion of houses who owns' instead of 'households that owned', and 'spent om housework' instead of 'on housework'. Spelling and word choices are generally clear enough not to impede communication, but achieving a higher band requires greater precision and zero slip-ups in basic word forms and prepositions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures successfully, such as 'while refrigerators were almost non-existent at just 2%'. There are frequent error-free sentences, and control of punctuation is generally good. Nevertheless, a number of persistent grammatical errors remain, including subject-verb agreement issues ('proportion of houses who owns' instead of 'own') and punctuation errors like comma splices ('In 1920, the washing machine was the most common appliance. owned by 40% of household'). Prepositions within grammatical patterns also occasionally falter, such as 'reaching to 70%' instead of 'reaching 70%'. To secure a higher band, the proportion of error-free complex sentences needs to increase while eliminating these recurring grammatical slips.
