Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graphs illustrate changes in ownership of electrical appliance washing machines and refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. the amount of time spent on household chores per week per household in a country between the years 1920 and 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the percentage of electric appliances steadily increases throughout the period, particularly for refrigerators, which was the highest among all other appliances. In contrast, the number of hours spent on these electric appliances declines steadily.
In the year 1920, washing machines were 40%; they grew to 60% in 1940 and again rose to 70% in 1960, falling slightly to 65% in 1980 and reaching their peak of approximately 73% in 2019. Vacuum cleaners were 30% in the year 1920, which increased continuously and reached its peak of 100% in the year 2019. Similarly, the refrigerator was at 0% at the beginning, which dramatically rose to 100% in the year 2019.
On the other hand, it was observed that the number of hours spent on the electric appliances for household chores per week and per household steadily declined. In the year 1920 it was 50 per hour, which declined approximately 35 per hour in 1940 and 20 per hour in 1960 and declined continuously till 2019

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making relevant comparisons across the given period. You successfully outlined the overall trends, noting the general increase in appliance ownership and the simultaneous decrease in housework hours. However, some areas are under-developed or inaccurately described. For instance, stating that washing machines were '40%' in 1920 describes a percentage of households, but writing that 'washing machines were 40%' is slightly imprecise phrasing. Furthermore, your description of the refrigerator starting at '0%' is inaccurate, as the data shows it started at 2%. To reach a higher level, ensure that all data points are cited with absolute precision and that comparisons between the rising appliance ownership and falling housework hours are integrated more smoothly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
Your writing maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the response into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You used basic cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'In contrast,' and 'On the other hand' to signal logical transitions between ideas. However, referencing and cohesion are sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, your opening sentences are fragmented and grammatically disconnected ('The line graphs illustrate... appliance washing machines... the amount of time spent...'), which disrupts the flow of information. To improve coherence and achieve a higher band, focus on constructing unified introductory sentences and ensure that referencing pronouns and transitional markers link your ideas smoothly without abrupt breaks.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You demonstrated an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and describing trends with words like 'steadily increases,' 'declines,' 'dramatically rose,' and 'peak.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and minor awkward collocations. For example, writing 'percentage of electric appliances' is imprecise because the graph measures the percentage of households possessing them, not the appliances themselves. Additionally, the phrase '50 per hour' is used incorrectly to mean 50 hours per week. While these vocabulary and word-choice errors do not impede communication, eliminating them and using more sophisticated phrasing would elevate your lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You utilized a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating time clauses and relative concepts successfully in parts of your writing. There is adequate control over past tense forms when discussing historical data ('grew,' 'rose,' 'reached'). However, the text contains some errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, the first paragraph suffers from a punctuation error and sentence fragment issue, as a full stop is incorrectly placed before 'the amount of time spent.' Other minor slips occur with prepositions and modifiers, such as 'declined approximately 35 per hour.' These errors are infrequent and rarely impede communication, but reducing structural mistakes and increasing the proportion of error-free complex sentences will help improve this score.
