Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both charts and making relevant comparisons across the entire time period. The overview clearly highlights the main trends, noting the upward trajectory of electrical appliance ownership and the downward trend in housework hours. Key data points are generally accurate, such as noting that the washing machine started at 40 percent in 1920 and refrigerators reached 100 percent later on. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, describing the washing machine in 2019 as being 'the least popular item as compared to 1920' is slightly confusing and inaccurate given its actual percentage of 75 percent. To reach a higher band, the response would need to ensure every comparative statement is completely clear and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Information is generally well-grouped, with the first body paragraph focusing on appliance ownership and the second addressing housework hours. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Towards 1980', and 'Subsequently', demonstrating a clear attempt to structure the text logically. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or slightly awkward, seen in phrases like 'Refrigerator and vacuum clearn both diverged in 2000 at 100% and maintained a straight path', where referencing and logical connections could flow more smoothly. Paragraphing is used appropriately, but sharpening the transitional phrases between sentences and paragraphs would elevate the organizational quality further.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items and descriptive verbs such as 'fluctuations', 'gradual fall', 'climbed a sharp rise', and 'declined'. However, there are noticeable vocabulary and spelling errors that occasionally detract from precision, such as 'ownership value' instead of 'ownership levels', 'Refrigeratot and vacuum clearn' (typos), and 'time consumption value'. Word choice and collocations are sometimes unnatural, such as 'maintained a straight path' for a plateau on a line graph. These errors do not impede overall communication, placing the response solidly in the mid-range for lexical resource. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to eliminate spelling mistakes and use more precise statistical collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic sentence structures and time markers. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in the description of the housework hours. Nevertheless, a number of grammatical errors and awkward structures persist throughout the text, such as missing prepositions or incorrect articles ('the fluctuations made in the ownership value electrical appliances', 'stood at 75% being the least popular item'), and tense or agreement slips ('maintainted an almost constant hours'). Punctuation also exhibits minor issues, such as a stray full stop in 'From 2000 to the end. it dropped slightly'. These errors rarely impede communication, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher level of grammatical control.
