Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of both the appliance ownership and the time spent on housework from 1920 to 2019. Key features are highlighted and well-selected, such as the dramatic rise of the refrigerator and vacuum cleaner to total dominance by the end of the period, contrasted with the steady decline in housework hours. However, there is a minor tendency to over-generalise or slightly misread specific details, such as stating the refrigerator 'accounted for almost nothing' when it started at two percent, and a small numerical slip regarding the final hours ('10 hours/hours/week'). Nonetheless, the core information and main trends are clearly reported, supported by data from the charts, placing this response comfortably at the targeted level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information is grouped sensibly, with an introductory overview paragraph, a body paragraph dedicated to appliance ownership trends, and a final paragraph focusing on the time spent on domestic chores. Cohesive devices are used adequately to connect ideas, such as 'Overall,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Washing machine was the popular appliance in 40% houses in 1920, where other two were less owned...'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different thematic areas of the visual data. Although referencing and linking could occasionally be smoother or more varied to reach higher bands, the overall arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'domestic chores', 'significantly', and 'omnipresent'. However, there are several lexical errors and awkward collocations that reveal a lack of precision, including spelling mistakes ('neccesary', 'applicances', 'comparively', 'ominpresent'), grammatical word-form issues ('appliances onwership', 'time consumption household chores'), and occasional odd phrasing like 'attained a gradual increase in 2019 at 75%'. While these errors do not impede communication and the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the main trends, the frequent minor slips in spelling and word choice prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like relative clauses ('households which owned...') and subordinate clauses ('while other two were less owned'). However, control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent, with frequent errors such as missing articles ('the washing machine', 'the other two'), punctuation issues (a trailing comma after a paragraph transition), awkward prepositions ('in 40% houses'), and a repetitive phrasing error in the final sentence ('took only 10 hours/hours/week'). While simple sentences tend to be accurate and meaning is generally clear, the presence of these persistent grammatical errors places the writing firmly in the lower-intermediate bracket.
