IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The line graph illustrates the percentage in ownership of electrical appliance of the time spent doing housework in households in a single country from 1920 to 2019.
Overall, unlike the second graph the general trend was upward in the first graph with some fluctuated behavior from the Washing machine.
At the beginning the Washing machine started as the highest with 40%. Then it continued growing until 1980 when it slightly dropped from 70 to above 60%. Then rose again to reach above 70% in 2019. Refrigerator started at the lowest with 0% but then it grow dramatically to reach above 50% by 1940. And it continued with the same behavior and reached 90% by 1960 then 100% by 1980. The Vacuum cleaner started under the Washing machine with 30%. Unlike the Washing machine it was more consistent. And by 1980 it had already surpassed the Washing machine with 90%. Then it reached 100% by 2000 and stayed there with the Refrigerator for the rest of the graph.
Meanwhile, the houseworkers started with 50 hours per week in the 1920's. And by time they were slowly decreasing. By 1960 they already dropped to only 20%. By 2019 they reached there lowest point at around 10%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main trends in appliance ownership and housework hours, and it provides some relevant comparisons between the data sets. However, certain aspects are under-developed. For instance, the discussion of the second graph regarding the weekly hours of housework focuses primarily on a sequential listing of drop-offs rather than fully synthesising the inverse relationship between appliance acquisition and time spent on chores. Key data points such as the 1980 milestone where refrigerators and vacuums reached peak adoption are highlighted, but the overview provided in the second paragraph is somewhat vague and focuses on structural comparisons of the graphs themselves rather than the underlying trends. To achieve a higher band, the overview should more clearly synthesise the core global trends, and all key features should be extended with more thorough comparative analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the different data sets. Paragraphing is used to separate the main topics logically. However, cohesion at times feels mechanical or repetitive, particularly in the heavy reliance on transitional phrases like 'Then' and 'And' to link sequential sentences, as seen in 'Then it continued growing... Then rose again...'. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression within paragraphs could be smoother to avoid a checklist-style delivery of data points. To move to a higher level, you should employ a wider variety of sophisticated cohesive devices and ensure that referencing and paragraph transitions flow more naturally without overusing basic chronological connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic trends through terms like 'ownership', 'percentage', and 'trend'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'fluctuated behavior' and 'dramatically', though there are noticeable instances of awkward word choice and collocation, such as referring to the time spent on chores as 'the houseworkers started with 50 hours' instead of 'the time spent on housework was 50 hours', and 'percentage in ownership of electrical appliance'. Spelling is generally accurate, but minor word-choice inaccuracies occasionally appear. To reach a higher band, you need to use a wider, more precise range of vocabulary with accurate collocations and better control over word forms, avoiding literal translations or imprecise terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing structures such as 'unlike the second graph the general trend was...' and subordinate clauses. There are several grammatical errors in punctuation, prepositions, and articles, such as omitting commas after introductory phrases ('At the beginning'), misusing prepositions ('percentage in ownership'), and confusing plural and singular contexts ('reached there lowest point' instead of 'their lowest point'). Nevertheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede overall communication. To achieve a higher band, you must demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, ensuring that verb tenses, articles, and possessive pronouns are handled flawlessly throughout.
