Student answer (Band 6.0)

The line graph illustrates the proportion of households using various appliances and how many hours in week spent in utilization of that devices in a country between 1920 to 2019.

Overall, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner experienced a significant rise over the period and reached a peak at the end, while washing machine demonstrated steady increase. However, number of hours per week of household usage was dramatically declined through the years.

In 1920, refrigerators were not used at all but over the time they were used by approximately every household and reached at the peak of 100% in 2019. In contrast, vacuum cleaner also took slow initiate which was roughly 30% in 1920, before rose to the level of refrigerators which was 100%.On the other hand, although washing machines marked as highest among all other categories, it only made up 70 percent by 2019.

Furthermore, the spending of home appliances in hours per week showed steady declined from 50 hours in 1920 to only 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You identify the main overall pattern: ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners rose substantially, while weekly housework time fell. You also include relevant figures, such as refrigerators reaching 100% and housework declining from 50 hours to about 10. This covers the task, but some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. Refrigerators were not absent in 1920; ownership was approximately 2%. Washing machines did not show a steady rise, since their share fell from about 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980 before increasing again. The claim that they were the highest category is also not supported across the period. To strengthen the response, report the washing-machine fluctuation and compare the appliances at key dates more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the appliance trends and housework hours. Linking expressions such as “Overall,” “In contrast,” and “Furthermore” help signal the main relationships, and the reader can follow the broad progression. However, some connections are not fully logical: “On the other hand” introduces the washing-machine figure without a clear contrast, and the appliance comparisons are compressed into a long paragraph. The overview also says washing-machine ownership increased steadily, which weakens the progression because the data include a dip. Grouping the three appliance trends together with clearer year-by-year comparisons, then treating housework separately, would make the organisation more controlled and cohesive.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “significant rise,” “reached a peak,” and “declined.” These choices show an attempt to describe trends rather than simply list figures. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, which limits precision: “in utilization of that devices,” “took slow initiate,” and “spending of home appliances” do not express the intended meanings clearly. “Usage” is also misleading for the hours of housework, which refers to time spent doing chores rather than using appliances. Aim for standard chart language such as “ownership,” “rose gradually,” and “time spent on housework.” More accurate collocations would make your meaning clearer and more natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses with “while,” “although,” and “before,” and the main trends are generally understandable. However, errors occur in basic sentence patterns as well as in longer structures. For example, “how many hours in week spent” lacks a clear subject and verb, while “number of hours … was dramatically declined” uses an incorrect passive form. There are also article, agreement, and preposition problems in “that devices” and “reached at the peak.” Punctuation is inconsistent, including the missing space after “100%.” Practise forming complete clauses and use simple past forms consistently for the historical data; then check articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries.
