cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The chart shows changes in the percentage of households that owned washing machines, refrigerators and vacuum cleaners as well as the average number of hours spent on housework per week between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, ownership of all three appliances increased over the period. Refrigerators and vacuum clearners became almost universal, while washing machines showed a small fell before rising again. In contrast, the time spent on housework decreased greatly.

In 1920, about 40 of households had a washing machine, compared with 30 owing a vacuum clearner. There were almost no refigerators at this time. By 1940, wasing machine ownership had risen to around 55, while refrigerators and vacuum clearners reached about 50 and 40 respectively. In 1060, refrigerators increaed sharply to around 90, and both washing machine and avcuum clearners were at about 65. By 2019, around 70 of homes had a washing machine, whilke refrigerators and avcuum cleaners were owned by about 95 of households.

The number of hours of housework fell steadily. In 1920, households spent about 50 hours per week on housework. This decreased to 35 hours in 1940 and 20 hours in 1960. It then fell slightly to around 15 hours in 1980 nad 2000, before reaching only 10 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response covers the task clearly, with an overview that identifies the broad rise in appliance ownership and the substantial fall in housework. It also selects relevant comparisons and tracks the main stages, including the sharp growth in refrigerator ownership and the later near-universal ownership of refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. Most figures are close to the chart, but there are several inaccuracies: in 1940 washing machines were about 60%, not 55%, and vacuum cleaners were about 50%, not 40%; in 1960 washing machines and vacuum cleaners were about 70%, rather than 65%. The final figures are also slightly understated. These do not obscure the overall trends, but more precise reporting would strengthen an otherwise well-focused summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The information is organised effectively into an introduction, a concise overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership and a final paragraph on housework. The progression through the years is easy to follow, and time markers such as “By 1940,” “In 1960” and “By 2019” help guide the reader. The contrast introduced by “In contrast” also clearly separates the housework trend from appliance ownership. Cohesion is generally flexible and unobtrusive, though the appliance paragraph moves quickly between several series, and some comparisons could be linked more explicitly. For example, grouping the refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner trends together would make their eventual saturation easier to track. Overall, the structure is clear and logical.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The response uses an adequate range of task-appropriate vocabulary, including “ownership,” “increased,” “decreased,” “sharply” and “steadily,” and the main trends are communicated clearly. However, spelling and word-choice errors are noticeable, including “clearners,” “refigerators,” “increaed” and “whilke.” There are also inaccurate or awkward expressions such as “40 of households,” “30 owing a vacuum clearner” and “showed a small fell.” These errors do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Use standard forms such as “40% of households” and “owned a vacuum cleaner,” and choose natural trend language such as “a slight decline.” Proofreading spelling and collocations would make the vocabulary more reliable.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0

There is a useful mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, and many sentences are grammatically controlled, such as “The number of hours of housework fell steadily” and “It then fell slightly to around 15 hours in 1980 and 2000.” The overview also uses a clear contrast structure. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly missing articles or verbs in constructions such as “By 1940, washing machine ownership had risen…” (the following clause, “while refrigerators…,” lacks a clear subject and verb) and “In 1060, refrigerators increased sharply…” (the year should be 1960, though this is a data-label issue). The phrase “40 of households had a washing machine” also needs a percentage marker. More consistent sentence construction and careful checking of clauses would improve accuracy while preserving the range already shown.
