IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line charts illustrate the percentage of households with electrical appliances and the number of hours spent on housework between 1920 and 2019 in one country.
Overall, since year 2000, 100% of households have both refrigerators and vacuum cleaners. Number of hours spend on houseworks every week fell gradually from 50 to 11 between 1920 and 2019.
In 1920 the number of households with refrigerators equaled 0. Since then the percentage of households with refrigerators rose steadly to reach its peak in 1980 at 100%. Since then to 2019 the number remained unchanged. The percentage of households with vacuum cleaners in 1920 was equal to 30, since then the number climbed until year 2000, when it reached its highest point of 100%, since then the number stayed constant. Changes in the ownership of the washing machines were not that significant. In 1920 40% of households owned washing machines, the number grow progressively to 1960 when it reached 70% and decreased in 1980. After that the percentage rise steadly to reach highest point of around 73% in 2019.
The number of hours spend on houseworks decreased sharply between 1920 and 1960 from 50 to 20 hours per week. After 1960 the change was not that significant anymore, but the the decrease was still visible with the lowest figure at approximately 11 hours in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers both charts and gives a clear overview: refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner ownership reaches full household coverage, while weekly housework time falls substantially. It also selects useful comparisons, including the sharp early decline in housework and the washing-machine rise followed by a dip and recovery. Most figures and trends match the data. However, the statement that refrigerator ownership was 0% in 1920 is slightly inaccurate; it was about 2%. The washing-machine endpoint is given as “around 73%” rather than approximately 75%, a small difference. The overview could be more precise by noting that washing-machine ownership fluctuated and remained below the other appliances, while housework time fell overall. These minor over-generalisations keep the account from being fully precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The organisation is clear: an introduction is followed by an overview, a paragraph on appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework time. The reader can follow the chronological comparisons, and linking expressions such as “After that” and “between 1920 and 1960” help establish sequence. This coherent arrangement is a strength. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because “since then” and “the number” recur repeatedly, and several long sentences join multiple changes with commas. For example, the vacuum-cleaner sentence moves from the starting figure through the rise and plateau in one chain. Use clearer sentence boundaries and vary referencing—for instance, “this proportion” or “ownership”—to make progression smoother and more flexible.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The response uses an adequate range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage,” “remained unchanged,” “climbed,” “decreased sharply,” and “lowest figure.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the writer attempts to distinguish rises, falls, and plateaus. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise or repetitive, however: “the number of households” is used where “the proportion” or “percentage” is meant, and “the number grow progressively” is not a natural description of a percentage trend. “Houseworks” is also not the appropriate form; use “housework,” which is uncountable. Replacing repeated “number” and “since then” with more precise trend language would improve flexibility and accuracy without changing the clear meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
There is a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including time clauses and comparisons, and the main meaning remains clear. Some grammatical errors occur, particularly in verb forms and agreement. Examples include “hours spend” instead of “hours spent,” “the number grow” instead of “the figure grew,” and “the percentage rise” instead of “the percentage rose.” The phrase “since year 2000” also needs an article (“since the year 2000”), while “the the decrease” contains a repeated word. Several sentences are long and joined mainly by commas, so punctuation and sentence control could be stronger. Proofread verb tense consistency and agreement, and divide chained descriptions into shorter, accurately punctuated sentences.
