cambridge writing task 1

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The line charts illustrate the modifications in the ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in a country over the time period between 1920 to 2019. The data is measured in percenatge.

Overall, it is evident that the percentage of households of refrigerator, vacuum cleaner and washing machine shows a significant rose, whereas number id housework perweek shows an opposite trend. Another noticable feature is that appliances like washing machine were fluctuating over the time peroid.

At the beginning of the period, refrigerator rose sharply from zero percent in 1920 to 90% in 1960, then stay satble to 2000. However, a linear increase was observed in the percentage of vaccum cleancer from 30% in 1920 and 100stood at approximately

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the broad contrast correctly: appliance ownership generally increased, while housework hours fell. You also report some relevant figures, such as vacuum-cleaner ownership starting at 30% and refrigerator ownership reaching 90% by 1960. However, the response is incomplete and addresses the task only partially. It stops mid-sentence at “100stood at approximately,” so the later trends and the housework data are not properly reported; the washing-machine fluctuation is mentioned but not supported with figures. There is also a factual error: refrigerator ownership was about 2% in 1920, rose to 100% by 1980, and remained there, rather than reaching 90% in 1960 and staying stable only to 2000. The response is 111 words, below the required 150, which contributes to the lack of coverage.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is a basic structure: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph beginning to describe the data. The overview also attempts to group the appliance trends against housework hours, giving the reader a general direction. However, the response has no complete ending or developed sequence of comparisons, and it breaks off mid-sentence. Connections between details are limited; “However” introduces the vacuum-cleaner trend, but the relationship between that trend and the refrigerator figures is not made clear. The overview’s mention of washing-machine fluctuations is not followed by an explanation. To improve, organise the body into complete comparisons, use clear time-based progression, and ensure each paragraph develops one coherent set of trends.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “ownership,” “percentage,” “significant,” and “opposite trend,” and you attempt to describe change with “rose sharply” and “fluctuating.” However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-form errors make the writing less clear, for example “percenatge,” “noticable,” “pero[id],” and “vaccum cleancer.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise, such as “the percentage of households of refrigerator” and “number id housework perweek.” Use standard collocations such as “the proportion of households owning refrigerators” and “hours spent on housework per week.” Accurate spelling and more precise trend vocabulary would make the report easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response includes some attempts at complex sentences, such as “Overall, it is evident that …, whereas …,” and “At the beginning of the period …, then ….” However, the range is limited, and errors are frequent enough to affect clarity. For example, “shows a significant rose” combines an incorrect verb form with an unsuitable construction; “then stay satble” has an incorrect tense; and “from 30% in 1920 and 100stood” is incomplete and lacks a clear grammatical relationship. The opening also uses the awkward time expression “between 1920 to 2019.” Practise complete past-tense sentences and check subject–verb agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. Proofreading would also help prevent the final sentence from ending unfinished.
