Student answer (Band 6.5)

The first line graph illustrates the variations in percentage of households with electrical appliance, washing machine, refrigerator and vaccum cleaner from 1920 to 2019. Additioanlly, second line charts dipicts about the number of hours houeholds spent doing house work in one country in same time period.

Overall, it is evident that all three appliances showed an increasing trend throughout the period. Refrigerator accounted for the largest variations in ownrership, whereas washing machine recoreded the lowest changes over the period. Moreover, the time spent doing work reduced gradually at the start of the time period, while a slight drop was experienced by the end.

The proportion for the ownership of refrigerator stood at 0% in 1920, it climbed significantly to about 55% in 1940, before peaking at 100% in 1980, afterwards in remained stable till 2019 at 100%. Likewise, the percentage for vacuum cleaner rose gradually from 30% in 1920 to 70% in 1960, it reached at its highest point at 100% in 2000, before being stable for further 19 years. Washing machine showed minor fluctuation. It started from 40% in 1920. Subsequently, it increased slightly to 70% in 1960. Afterwards, it dropped slightly to approximately 64% in 1980, then in increased marginally to nearly72% i n 2019.

The number of hours of housework per week was 50 in 1920, it reduced slightly to roughly 35 in 1940, followed by a minimal decline to 20 in 1960. Then it decreased more to nearly 15 in 2000, before hitting a low at 10 in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You cover both charts and provide a clear overview: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework hours fell. The main comparisons are supported with relevant figures, including refrigerators reaching 100% by 1980 and washing machines changing less markedly. Most reported values match the chart, and small approximations such as 64% and 72% are acceptable. However, the overview says all appliances increased “throughout,” although washing-machine ownership dipped between 1960 and 1980; describing this as an overall rise with a temporary decline would be more precise. The housework trend is also slightly over-generalised: the fall was substantial early on, then levelled at about 15 hours from 1980 to 2000 before declining again. These minor imprecisions limit the precision of an otherwise well-supported summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised effectively into an introduction, overview, appliance details and housework details. Information generally progresses in a logical order, and linking expressions such as “Overall,” “Likewise,” “Subsequently” and “before” help show comparisons and sequence. The reader can follow the main trends without difficulty. Some sentence connections are less controlled, however: “The proportion … stood at 0% in 1920, it climbed…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma, and a similar pattern occurs in the housework paragraph. The repeated use of “before” and “slightly” also makes some transitions feel formulaic. Use full stops or conjunctions to connect complete clauses, and vary the linking language while keeping the clear paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a suitable range of trend vocabulary, including “climbed significantly,” “peaking,” “remained stable,” “fluctuation” and “marginally.” These choices communicate the main movements and comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. However, several spelling errors—“vaccum,” “Additioanlly,” “dipicts,” “houeholds,” “ownrership” and “recoreded”—show inconsistent control. Some phrases are also awkward or imprecise, such as “largest variations in ownership” where you mean the greatest increase, and “the percentage for the ownership of refrigerator.” Prefer concise, natural collocations such as “refrigerator ownership” and “the largest increase.” Check spelling carefully and use “appliances” in the plural when referring to the three categories.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses with “while,” “before” and “whereas,” and the overall meaning remains understandable. However, some errors recur in sentence boundaries and clause construction. For example, “The proportion … stood at 0% in 1920, it climbed…” is a comma splice; separate the clauses or join them with “and.” In “it reached at its highest point,” the verb pattern is incorrect, and “then in increased” appears to contain a subject–verb form error. Articles and number also need attention in “electrical appliance” and “second line charts.” These issues, alongside occasional punctuation problems, prevent consistently accurate control. Proofread each sentence for complete clauses, correct verb patterns and agreement.
