IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The line graph illustrates the trend between possession of electrical appliances and weekly hours spent on household chores for a period between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, it is evident that the popularity of electrical appliances grew over the period resulting in decline of hours spent on housework per week. Another profound thing is that by the end of the time period, every house owned two appliances (Refrigerator and Vacuum cleaner).
The trend of owning electrical machines grew steadily over the period. Refrigerators, which were non-existent in 1920, displayed a particularly evident growth. By 1940, more houses had refrigerators than vacuum cleaners. By 1980, 100% of the houses had refrigerators, surpassing the other two appliances
Vacuum cleaner, which started off at 30% in 1920, account for similar rise in usage. By 2000, the numbers peaked as all houses owned this appliance.
On the other hand, the change in ownership of washing machine was relatively less steep. Throughout the period, it rose from 40% to approximately 74%.
Weekly hours people spent on house chores decreased over the period. The figure, which was 50 hours per week, dropped substantially to 20% in the next four decades as appliance appliances became popular. Following this another half fold decrease to 10% was seen by the end of period in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main overall pattern: appliance ownership generally increased while weekly housework hours fell, and you compare several appliances across the period. The refrigerator and vacuum-cleaner milestones are also relevant. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: refrigerators were not “non-existent” in 1920, as ownership was about 2%, and the graph shows washing-machine ownership dipping from 70% in 1960 to 65% in 1980 rather than rising steadily. The housework figure falls to about 20 hours in 1960, not “20%,” and reaches roughly 11 hours in 2019. Your overview is useful, but “every house owned two appliances” is imprecise because both refrigerators and vacuum cleaners reached 100%, while washing machines did not. More precise reporting would strengthen coverage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and separate discussion of appliance ownership and housework hours. The sequence from general trends to individual appliances is easy to follow, and transitions such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal relationships. However, progression is occasionally weakened by abrupt or incomplete connections. The sentence ending “surpassing the other two appliances” needs a full stop, and the following “Vacuum cleaner” paragraph begins without a clear link to the previous comparison. Some references, such as “the numbers” and “this,” are not fully precise. Grouping the appliance comparisons more systematically and using clearer links between the data points would make cohesion more flexible and less dependent on basic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for describing trends, including “grew,” “decline,” “surpassing,” “dropped substantially,” and “relatively less steep.” These choices communicate the main patterns, and some less common expressions show an attempt to vary your language. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “the trend between possession” would be more naturally expressed as “changes in ownership,” while “every house owned two appliances” is imprecise. “Non-existent” overstates the refrigerator figure, and “half fold decrease” is not a natural expression for a reduction. There is also repetition in “appliances became popular” and “appliance appliances.” Aim for precise chart vocabulary such as “the proportion of households” and “fell to,” and check collocations before using less familiar phrases.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including relative clauses such as “Refrigerators, which were non-existent in 1920,” and a contrast structure beginning “On the other hand.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation issues reduce accuracy. For example, “Vacuum cleaner … account for similar rise” has subject–verb agreement and article problems; “as appliance appliances became popular” contains an unintended repetition and an incorrect singular form. The sentence about refrigerators in 1980 lacks final punctuation, and “the end of period” is missing an article. Also, “dropped … to 20%” uses the wrong grammatical form for a measure of hours. Review agreement, articles, and punctuation, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
