Student answer (Band 6.0)

The provided line charts illustrate the variation in the number of household owning electrical appliances and the time utilize doing domestic housework in one nation between 1920 and 2019.

Overall, it is clear that the proportion of household owning all three electrical appliances increased over the time period. On the other hand, number of hours spent on housework per week shows the continuous decline throughout the time.

To begin with, washing machine had the highest owning of electrical appliances accounted for 40% and increased gradually and reached at 70% in 1960, followed by refrigerator at 30%. It showed a significant rose at 90% in 1960. The figure increased steadly and reached at 100% in 2019 same trend followed by vaccum cleaner.

Probing ahead, in 1920 there were only 50 hours per weeks that spent on household work such as washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning. The figure shows the rapid decline and in 1960 the number of hours reduced to 20. Furthermore, with the small decline it reached at 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You provide an overview of the two main trends: appliance ownership generally rose, while weekly housework time fell. You also include relevant figures, such as washing-machine ownership reaching about 70% in 1960 and housework falling to 20 hours by that year. However, some comparisons are unclear or inaccurate. In 1920, washing machines—not refrigerators—had the highest ownership, at 40%, compared with 30% for vacuum cleaners and about 2% for refrigerators. The refrigerator reached 90% in 1960, but the sentence saying it was “followed by refrigerator at 30%” confuses the series. The account also overlooks the washing-machine dip around 1980 and gives the final housework figure as 10 rather than about 11 hours. More precise comparisons and coverage of these changes would make the report more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that separate appliance ownership from housework hours. This gives the reader a sensible route through the information, and transitions such as “Overall” and “Furthermore” help signal progression. The appliance paragraph, however, becomes difficult to follow because the figures and series are not consistently linked: “followed by refrigerator at 30%” conflicts with the next sentence about 90% in 1960, leaving the comparison unclear. The phrase “same trend followed by vacuum cleaner” also does not specify the relevant years or values. To strengthen cohesion, group each appliance’s changes in a clear sequence and use explicit references such as “the refrigerator figure” or “by contrast.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “proportion,” “significant,” “gradually,” “decline,” and “domestic housework.” These choices help describe trends, and the meaning is generally understandable. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, however: “the time utilize doing domestic housework,” “highest owning,” and “a significant rose” do not express the intended ideas naturally. There are also spelling errors in “steadly” and “vaccum,” and “10%” is not the appropriate unit for hours. Aim for precise trend language and standard collocations, for example, “time spent doing housework,” “ownership was highest,” and “rose significantly.” Proofreading spelling and units would improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the overview contrast introduced by “On the other hand” and the time clauses describing changes. The main trends remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “the number of household owning” needs a plural noun and a possessive or clearer construction, while “the time utilize doing” lacks a correctly formed verb phrase. In “washing machine had the highest owning … accounted for 40%,” the sentence structure does not clearly connect the subject and figure. There are also article and agreement problems in “number of hours … shows” and “with the small decline it reached.” Build more reliable sentences around patterns such as “The proportion of households owning X rose from … to …” and check articles, plurals, and verb forms.
