IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The charts below show the changes in ownership of electrical appliances and amount of time spent doing housework in households in one country between 1920 and 2019.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Percentage of households with electrical appliances (1920-2019)
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The chart illustrates the changing trend for the ownership of washing machine, refrigerator and vacuum cleaner and the time spent in performing housework in a week for year between 1920 and 2019.
Overall, an increase has been observed in the use of all three appliances as time passes. In contrast, a decrease has been seen in the number of hours devoted for house chores per week. The unit given is percentage.
In year 1920, the most owned appliance was washing machine found in 40% of houses .This number continues to increase and reached to 60% in 1940 and 70% in 1960. However, a slight decrease has been noticed in year 1980 when the percentage falls around 62 %, but this value rise again to 70% in 2000 and about 75% in 2019. The second known machine was vacuum cleaner in year 1920 (30%).
This percentage rapidly increases with time. 50 % of houses were familiar with vacuum cleaner by year 1940, 70% in 1960, 90 % in 1980 and finally reached to 100 % in year 2000 and 2019. However, the existence of refrigerators were nealry zero at the early 1920. This appliance become famous in well above 50 % of houses in 1940, the figure changes to 90% in 1960 and 100% in 1980 and remain steady till 2019.
In addition to this, the second graph clearly demonstrate a decrease in number of hours spent by a country in doing chores like washing clothes, preparing meals and cleaning per week. In 1920, 50 % of total time has been spent on housework. This percentage reduced well under 40% in 1940, 20% in 1960, around 12% in 1980 and 2000 and stoped at 10% in 2019.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover both charts and give a clear overview of the main contrast: appliance ownership generally rises while housework time falls. The appliance figures are mostly well selected and accurate, including the refrigerator reaching 100% by 1980 and vacuum cleaners reaching full ownership by 2000. You also report the washing-machine dip and subsequent recovery. However, the overview says all appliances increased, which slightly overgeneralises because washing-machine ownership falls between 1960 and 1980. More importantly, the second chart measures hours, not percentages: phrases such as “50% of total time” and “this percentage” misidentify the unit, and the 1980 and 2000 figures are closer to 15 hours than 12. Keep the coverage, but state the units precisely and make the overview reflect the small fluctuation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, separate discussion of appliance ownership, and a final paragraph on housework hours. This makes the information easy to follow, and sequencing the appliance data by year supports comparison. The contrast marker “In contrast” is also effective. To make the progression more controlled, avoid repeatedly beginning sentences with “This percentage” or “This appliance”; these references can be vague, particularly when several series are being discussed. Some linking words, such as “However” before the refrigerator trend, do not express a clear contrast. At this level, the organisation is coherent, but more precise referencing and more purposeful transitions would make cohesion less mechanical and bring the account closer to a consistently smooth progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “ownership,” “slight decrease,” “reached,” “remain steady,” and “devoted.” These choices help describe trends and comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. However, some expressions are unnatural or imprecise for chart reporting: “the second known machine,” “were familiar with vacuum cleaner,” and “existence of refrigerators” do not describe household ownership accurately. There are also spelling errors such as “nealry” and “stoped,” alongside awkward phrases such as “for year between.” Aim for standard collocations used in data descriptions and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would improve clarity without requiring unnecessarily elaborate wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and more complex sentences, including clauses with “when” and “as,” and the overall meaning can usually be understood. However, grammatical control is uneven, with errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence boundaries. For example, “the ownership of washing machine” needs an article or plural form, while “This appliance become famous” and “this value rise again” have incorrect verb forms. In “the second graph clearly demonstrate,” the subject and verb do not agree. Punctuation is also inconsistent, as in “houses .This number.” Work on accurate past-tense reporting, singular/plural agreement, and sentence punctuation; these corrections would make your varied sentence attempts more reliable.
